There are those who think that boxes are the wave of the future: notions
about the necessity of cork having been dispelled, glass bottles are the next
to go! Here's an interesting French site dedicated to box wines - I'd have had
my doubts, but we visited the shop earlier this year and found some of the
wines quite acceptable - and we didn't even get into the good stuff
(Ch. Guiney, for example, said to be a bargain at E50 for 3L).

At the cave cooperative near my house you can get very nice Burgundy white or red for less than 2 per liter. Most people bring large jugs and fill up. Probably the best bang for the buck anywhere.

One of our favorites is the Mirassou Pinot Noir. It's in pretty wide distribution down here and can be found for $8-11. Definitely has less oak and more berry to it than most others from the SFO "region."

Here is a link to my cellar online and it is sorted by "value". I don't have a ton of cheaper wines in there, but I do have a few for reference.
The reason I don't have a ton of wines is that I drink them quicker and don't hold them as long.
Also, here is my consumed listing, sorted by value. I generally taste wine before I buy so I liked most of these. You can use these lists as reference, but YMMV.

Picked up some 2002 McLaren Vale, South Australia shiraz for AUD$8 a bottle. Packed with a cork so is not one of the recent 'cheapskin' cleanskins.
If you're in Sydney then let me know as I should have some for a while - I'll get a few cases this weekend!

If you can find Juan Gil in your neck of the woods, I'd recommend giving it a shot. Some friends served it at dinner, we bought a case the next day. Just now I did a google check on the price (I remembered it was less than $30 but couldn't remember how much) and it came up for sale on the internet at $16.99 a bottle. It also showed a RP rating of 90 if you're into that. Very nice Spanish red that works well with food, but could be enjoyed on its own.
For a merlot in the same price range look for the American Winetasters Society merlot. I haven't tried the latest release, however, past releases have been very nice at the price. AWS is not a vineyard - the 2003 was from the Stags Leap district, the current 2005 release is from Oakville.
A number of good Zins in and around this price, Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel may be a bit over $20, can be found for a bit under. Gallo's Rancho Zabaco Heritage Vines Zinfandel is nice and in your price range, the less expensive Dancing Bull makes a great party wine at <$10/bottle.
And to bring back to Italian, which is where the OP started try Masi Campofiorin Rosso del Veronese

To find a great deal, look to wine regions that are not as trendy, such as Lodi, CA.
If you want cheap and good:
Peirano Estate Vineyards, Lodi, CA
They have a $2/bottle Zinfandel that you can only buy by-the-case at the winery itself. Lodi excels in Zin and even though this bottle is not as complex as an old vine zin, a case costs less than most single bottles! Who needs 2-buck Chuck. This wine actually tastes good. No burn your nose alcohol like bad cheap wines.
Michael-David Vineyards - Can find their wines at Cost-Plus and Costco as well. I've loved all their reds and they are very well priced. around $15/bottle, depending on the wine

If you are looking for a reliable, aromatic white wine, Marlborough (NZ) Sauvignon Blancs are now in 2007 release.
Just tried a Matua 2007 Sauv. Blanc (at around USD$12); this is from the Wairu Valley in Marlborough, just in case you have a selection, in your search.
FYI we also had a Pinot Noir at lunch, Montana, also from the Marlborough region. Great if you seek a gutsy red that is a lot lighter than a Cab Sav, but is a notch or two above the 'cheap' category.
(If anyone has some great 'finds' from touring the wineries or shops in this area, please PM or post your comments so we can try for ourselves in the near future ^)
