Fun with Miss-spelled Menue's
What humourous spelling or grammar have you noticed at your local food suppliers or restaurants?
There are few safer bets than finding the grocer's apostrophe or some kind of misspelling at my local fruit shop; the local Chinese palace gets it wrong as often as the local pub or sports club. (Hope you enjoyed the thread title :D) Bad taste of alphabet soup If they walked into a typical Sydney restaurant, Helen Lucas and Brenda Millott would not be a bit surprised to see this menu: Entree's: Potatoe and Leak Soup, Brushetta Main's: Chargrilled stake with brocoli and zuchini, Spagetti bolonaise, Jumbo club sandwhich Desert: Rasberry sunday, Choclate crossant's, Vannilla soufle, Deserts come with large Cuppachino. Frequent encounters with such spellings led them to produce a small book called Eat Your Words for the grammatically challenged in the Australian food industry. "I have never seen a menu with no spelling or grammatical errors," Lucas told us. "It's very widespread because people didn't know where to go to get spellings quickly." The local fruit shop guys maybe have a sense of humour - hence Potatoe! :D |
Wow...maybe it's just a Sydney thing, but I very rarely see a menu mispelling in the restaurants I frequent. Typically, the exceptions are in ethnic restaurants where English is not their first language. The good food more than makes up for it though! :)

The 'Cows Lever' on the menu in a restaurant in Japan will stay with me for a lifetime. While more 'Engrish' than mispelling, it certainly made me chuckle all day. I assume its Cows Liver, but you can never be too sure.

And this was repeated subsquently throughout. Still they should know better. Miss spelled English and just plain bad English is everyre here in Tainan City, Taiwan. There is just not enough English speakers here to correct the bad English. Some favorites are - a hair salon called "F U * K" has a HUGE sign on one of the main streets. Go to restaurants that are foreigner friendly which means "english" menu and you get varied spelling like "Coconut Mike with lemonass chicken"。 When I remember more, I will post. |

When I lived in MN, my favorite Thai place served a dish that was garnished with "road peanut".

I was at a fancy restaurant in Baltimore and the menu had either "potatoe" or "tomatoe" and there was a sign for karaoke. I forgot how they spelled it, but it was not correct. I wrote a note to the manager.

Actually, that is Japanese that is literally translated into romanized characters. You want a coffee in Japan you do say "cohee".
Still they should know better. "What did you say?" I asked increduously. "Garbage soup" he repeated. "I'm sorry, but I could swear you just said 'Garbage soup'. Would you mind spelling that for me, please?" He looked at me like I was a fair dinkum idiot, and said "C-A-B-B-A-G-E soup. Garbage soup. Now do you understand?" And we just laughed and laughed and said "No thank you. Sounds delicious, but we'll pass." ;) |
The Phoenix Chinese Restaurant in York used to have Aromatic Crispy Dick on their menu.
