- Starbucks serves as a transition or gateway product to the independents. They expand the market, introducing more consumers to high end coffee purchasing which creates a larger customer base for independents.
- The number of independent coffee shops have been on the rise, not declining as Starbucks has grown.

The location it is slated to go in is called Sunset junction and already houses a great chese monger-Sliverlake Cheese Store as well as a good restaurant, florist, and some small shops.Parking is a PITA.
There is a chain of coffee shops/bakeries in the bay area which brews(but does not sell)Intelligentsia coffee called Specialities which is how I discovered this great coffee roaster.

It's going to be a real Intelligentsia...there was an article in Imbibe magazine talking about how this is a test for them, since it's the first one outside of Chicago. They're going to be roasting on site, so you'll be able to get really fresh beans.
Have you tried LA Mill coffee? I know people who swear by it, but I haven't gotten any of the beans. I've been bringing Stumptown beans home from Portland, although I recently brought some Vivace home from Seattle and really like it.

Folks with an interest in Fair Trade Coffee should read this piece from the Cato Journal (.pdf)
