Unfortunately, I don't know enough about bourbon to tell if this is a good one or not. The old fashioned I made was good but I've also tried it straight and I'm not sure I'll ever have a palate for bourbon. Seemed thin and hot but I feel that way about all bourbons I've tried.

Gets pretty good reviews, like most of the other Kirkland liquors.

Are you sure that's an old fashioned? I don't see a twist or a cherry.

A Rye Mule made with High West Double Rye and Fever Tree Ginger Beer so it was nice and spicy like i like it. First thing I did after coming back from polo scrimmage, really hit the spot as its a hot and humid morning here.

Old fashioned with orange peel, no cherry.

I also don't drink bourbon straight. The Kirkland Signature Bottled-in-Bond is pretty good when in an Old Fashioned; however, I prefer the Kirkland Signature Small Batch (which is basically Barton 1792) in Old Fashioneds as it's a little more milder. Sadly, I missed this year's drop of Small Batch, so I picked up seven bottles of Bottled-in-Bond to help tide me over until May 2026 (when Small Batch drops again). Each Costco is allotted a few hundred bottles. At my local Costcos, they are usually gone in less than a week.

People call these bourbons as being a great value. Bottled-in-Bond is about $23 for a 1L bottle; about $18 for the Small Batch.

We will be dining next week at Guesthouse Tavern in West Des Moines to celebrate BamaVol Jr #2’s birthday. One of the drinks on their menu is a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. Apparently not an old fashioned like I’ve had before. “Lighter and brighter”. I will be trying one.

Old Fashioneds are THE predominant cocktail in Wisconsin, usually made with Brandy (Wisconsinites drink a staggering % of the brandy compared to the rest of the US). Elsewhere most Old Fashioneds are made with bourbon (we prefer rye if going the bourbon route).

In Wisconsin (at least the parts I know), every small town has at least a couple bars/restaurants that are full of people eating fried walleye and drinking brandy old fashioneds on Friday nights. Often with a salad bar, although I'm not sure how prevalent those are post-COVID. 25 minutes south of the border and I don't see that here, I wonder if the restaurant owner is a WI transplant?

Were you given the option of sweet or sour for your drink?

No choice on the drink. I don’t know much about the restaurant. It’s called the Guesthouse. As predicted, there were many deer heads on the wall. They treated us well. The manager brought a free appetizer. The server comped one of our drinks for my son’s birthday. A couple drinks came with pull tab lottery tickets and we won a couple free drinks as well. Drink description below.
