The Cereal Thread

I like cereal. Maybe not as much as Seinfeld, but it's tasty. I'm a sugar fiend, so "healthy" cereals aren't my thing. My favs (in order of healthiness):

-Kellogg's Raisin Bran
-Honey Bunches o' Oats with Strawberries.
-Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
-Cap'n Crunch.
-Fruity Pebbles.

One more thing... a few weeks ago in the BA F Lounge at LHR, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER... I ate cereal with fruit it in. And it was decent (came about because all they had were corn flakes, and the fruit was right there... why not dump in a scoop?).

I know... I'm weird. At least I don't put mayo it my cereal :p

EDIT: Oh yeah... how much milk do you put in? I flood mine. And it has to be ice cold. But once the cereal has reached the soggy state, I stop... I HATE soggy cereal.

Cheerios, add strawwberries or bananas
Post honey nut shredded wheat
Smart Start
Oatmeal with brown sugar

I love me some carbs. Mm Mm Mm.

diamedic Feb 5, 2007 7:52 pm

I like the Safeway knockoffs. Cheaper but just as good, IMHO.

kingalien Feb 5, 2007 8:00 pm

Cheerios too with strawberries and bananas, blueberries too.
For sugar rush, nothing beats Tony the Tiger :)

I really enjoy cereal.

Honey-Nut Cheerios
Corn Flakes with Blueberries or Bananas
Rice Krispies with fruit as well
Honey Bunches o' Oats
Alpha-Bets (a favorite from my childhood)
Oatmeal with Brown Sugar (especially on the road in the winter)

I don't like Riasin Bran because I don't like raisins.

For me, cereal's great for an evening snack, but an insult at breakfast.

Rejuvenated Feb 5, 2007 10:10 pm

Cocoa Puffs & Trix are still my favorites. Yes I still feel the way my handle portrays me. ;)

fs2k2isfun Feb 5, 2007 10:17 pm

Frosted Mini Wheats and Raisin Bran are the winners here.

Rejuvenated Feb 5, 2007 10:27 pm

Lucky Charms and Cocoa Pebbles would also fit my list. Man am I feeling like a kid again............

Bobster Feb 5, 2007 10:38 pm

I like Quaker Puffed Rice, but it's almost impossible to find in stores anymore. It's still around, but in limited production, you can get it direct from Quaker's online store. The cereal section in the grocery store has 200 different kinds of cereal, but they don't have room for one stupid box of puffed rice anymore. Invented it 1904, hard to believe it lasted all that time and then disappeared.

bkramt1 Feb 6, 2007 9:47 am

Honey Bunches of Oats (HBO) - banana, is my favorite. Also as a late night snack and the cereal bars are good, too.

miki Feb 6, 2007 10:00 am

I am a cereal addict. But living in Switzerland I can't get my favorite American cereals.

That list includes:

Lucky Charms
Multigrain Cheerios
Honey Nut Cheerios
Life
Fruit Loops
Cinimon Toast Chrunch (Cini Minis do not compare)
Rice Chex

My favorite combination of cereals is Life on bottom and Honey Nut Cheerios on top. MMMM. The Sweetness of the Honey Nut balences very nicely with the Life and the textures mix very nicely together.

As for Swiss cereals go:

Crisp Rice (The kind you get at Migros but not Migros brand)

So anyone willing to help my cause of not having American cereal and ship it to me?

majikTib Feb 6, 2007 10:17 am

I do QuickOats for breakfast and lunch. 3/4 cup of Oats, add hot water, mix in one scoop of Whey Protein, and I'm good to go ^ use milk instead of water, and it tastes like good 'ol Chocolate milk. Trying to stay healthy and fit

Rejuvenated Feb 6, 2007 8:34 pm

I even love my Cocoa puffs in chocolate milk! ^

mattkorey Feb 7, 2007 1:00 pm

My favorite is Grape Nuts with a little Cinnamon Life thrown in for a kick. I can play tennis four hours and hours off a nice, big bowl of Grape Nuts.

My favorite from when I was a kid was Quisp. Ah, the sweet tooth decay of youth.

IceTrojan Feb 7, 2007 1:09 pm

We used to mix the full-on sugar rush cereals with the plain versions for our kids. Mix rice crispies with cocoa pebbles or fruity pebbles. Mix Kix with Cocoa Puffs, etc.

Cap'n Crunch and Froot Loops make great finger food. ^

I try to put a certain amount but not overflow and would eat them instantly as I too hate soggy cereals which happens if you dip them and leave it out long before eating them.

Rejuvenated Feb 7, 2007 4:13 pm

I should add Honey Smacks to my list as well.

gforce Feb 7, 2007 6:46 pm

Given FT's global audience, I'm pretty surprised nobody mentioned swiss muesli as their #1 cereal.

My long-time favorite breakfast has been muesli with milk and bananas.
Others at the top of my list include Kelloggs Raisin Bran and the relatively newer Kellogg K with Almonds and Vanilla.

PSUhorty Feb 7, 2007 6:53 pm

Cracklin' Oat Bran.

N751PR Feb 7, 2007 9:47 pm

I am a breakfast slave to Lucky Charms. :D

Kettering Northants QC Feb 7, 2007 11:17 pm

We all have our little ways of doing things. I like to put just barely enough milk to cover up the cereal and then let it sit for a minute to soak it up some, so there is no excess liquid. I'm sure that says something psychological, but I don't want to know what it is!

Kagehitokiri Feb 8, 2007 3:28 pm

count chocula ^^ ;)

...actually, multigrain cheerios :D (for the nutritional values, without tasting bad or getting really soggy)

Scott in LA Feb 8, 2007 5:06 pm

Oatmeal Crisp, either the raisin or maple varieties.

lidotaja Feb 8, 2007 5:29 pm

Cereal is food of the gods, IMHO.

I've got so many favorites that I won't even bother listing them. I usually have three to seven different boxes at home.

This thread did make me remember a cereal that my parents used to eat - it was called TEAM, I think. As a little kid I didn't appreciate it (preferred Honeycomb or Golden Grahams -- mom rarely bought Cap'n Crunch or Cocoa Puffs), but later, apparently right before it was discontinued, I came to rather like it.

But when I'm in Europe, I love muesli with chocolate bits in it. Yes, I'm a chocoholic. :D

Flyin'Mom Feb 8, 2007 5:33 pm

Post Crunchy Pecan. This stuff is so good, but must be some of the most fattening cereal on the planet. (which I'm sure is why I like it)
1/2 cup has 220 calories and 6g of fat!

lebowski2222 Feb 8, 2007 5:36 pm

1. LIFE - Cinnamon or Regular
2. Golden Grahams

jtkauai Feb 8, 2007 5:44 pm

Homemade granola, which we make with grains, nuts seeds and various dried fruits. Also home-ground mixed hot grain cereal. All with rice dream on top.

Yumm

hsxagent Feb 8, 2007 6:18 pm

tdo-ca Feb 8, 2007 7:27 pm

Cap'n Crunch
Ohs
Apple Cinnamon Cheerios
Granola
Kellogg's Raisin Bran
Honey Bunches of Oats
Golden Grahams
and, when feeling nostalgic...Honeycomb or Sugar Pops!

sangster Feb 8, 2007 9:34 pm

1. Trader Joe's Organic High Fiber O's
2. Life
3. Cap'n Crunch

Rejuvenated Feb 8, 2007 9:46 pm

My least favourite is definately Bran Flakes......yuck! :td:

Travlynn Feb 9, 2007 12:40 am

Back when Kelloggs had the AA certs on the box we got used to eating Special K and Smart Start - not for breakfast, but to make marshmallow cookies out of. I still mix up an occasional batch, and they're great to take on a foodless AM flight. Cereal on the go.

pseudoswede Feb 9, 2007 9:58 am

Some of my favorites:
* Smart Start (original)
* Cracklin' Oat Bran
* Low-Fat Granola with Raisins
* Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds
* Frosted Mini-Wheats

Unfortunately, all of the above have been nixed in the Swede household because of the higher-than-normal sugar content and Baby Swede's nut allergies.

Now I'm stuck with Multi-Grain Cheerios, which isn't bad. Maybe I'll look into Life Cereal.

As for milk, I don't like a lot of it in the bowl, but it does have to be ice cold.
