Crazy how much my tastes in this change, though. Growing up I would have had to put tons of sugar on a cereal that had so little already in it. Now I have regularly eaten this and many other very low sugar cereals without any sweetener added at all, and with skim (fat free) milk (or more recently, soy milk, though admittedly vanilla soy milk). I don't think I could eat any of those really sweet cereals anymore, just as I can't really drink a corn-syrupy regular soda. Thinking back though, Golden Grahams was probably my childhood favorite.

WonderDude Feb 9, 2007 10:32 pm

My two faves as a kid were Golden Grahams and Sugar Pops.

Now I'm a Crunchy Corn Bran dude. IMHO, best tasting of the high-fiber bunch.

I did eat Cracklin' Oat Bran for a while, but it was too heavy. And it reminds me of dog food.

Owlchick Feb 12, 2007 6:44 pm

1. Cocoa Krispies (or the bag equivalent from Safeway)
2. Cap'n Crunch (with or without crunchberries)
3. Frosted Flakes

I like oatmeal, too, the kind you have to cook. I usually add chopped dates to it, although I'm dismayed that Trader Joe's no longer carries the kind with oat flour coating. Dole dredges their chopped dates in sugar, which just seems wrong. Then I add in some brown sugar, maple syrup and whatever else I have that seems like a good idea at the time. Top with a little bit of milk or cream. Mmm! :)

Spiff Feb 12, 2007 7:04 pm

Cocoa Puffs and Captain Crunch.

For some reason, there was a period of about 2 years where I ate nothing but Kellogg's healthier cereals... ;)

Rejuvenated Feb 12, 2007 8:37 pm

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Honey Nut Cherrios.

ladiflier Feb 13, 2007 1:27 pm

Frosted Flakes
Capn' Crunch
Frosted Mini Wheates

The milk has to be icy cold and I don't like soggy cereal. The CC and FMW hold up pretty well in milk!!

I do like Cream of Wheat Maple and Brown sugar for the winter! And on vacation I love a good oatmeal with brown sugar and honey. YUM!!!

I believe CC is plastic coated. It wouldn't get soggy in sulfuric acid. :D

Yep. Those airline miles did it to me too. ;)

During Lenten fasting periods, I usually make up some McCann's Irish Oatmeal and add brown sugar, raisins, and cinnamon toward the end of the cooking or heating up process.

Other than this and for a little variety, I will eat Kashi GoLean Crunch from time to time with some soy milk.

I used to like Total Corn Flakes, but now I can no longer find it on the shelves of any store in my area, so I have to assume it has been discontinued.

Cracklin' Oat Bran = Colon Blow
I'm a Corn Flakes guy. With just enough milk so that you can see it in the bowl. Any more, and you have ruined a good cereal. And 2 1/2 tsps of sugar. And a banana (sliced) added.
And no...a Corn Flake with sugar added is not the same as a Frosted Flake.

Analise Feb 15, 2007 2:54 pm

Cocoa Pebbles
Cap'n Crunch
Special K with Strawberries

greenlotus Feb 23, 2007 3:22 pm

I eat vector 5 days a week. It's made by Kellogg's but you can't get it in the US. It's awesome!!! Best cereal out there!

OK - in addition to all of those, a childhood favorite of mine was "Sugar Jets". Anyone else remember that one?

I'm sure that today's "Honey Smacks" are much healthier than yesteryear's "Sugar Smacks".

Meanwhile, when I'm trying to behave I eat the bagged, single grain, popped cereals - wheat, rice, corn without anything added.

My favorite from when I was a kid was Quisp. Ah, the sweet tooth decay of youth.

Quazy for Quisp also. Available online. Though now I find Anahola Granola Tropical hard to resist. For a real splurge--forget the milk--corn flakes, freshly sliced peaches, (sugar if you must), and table cream. The kind you put in coffee.

jeffreyt Feb 23, 2007 8:38 pm

Yeah!!! I see Quisp is available through Amazon.com's marketplace.

Fredd Feb 24, 2007 8:40 am

Interesting that only a couple of posters have mentioned hot cereal. When we were kids, my mother often served Wheatena [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheatena ] and my younger brother has maintained his taste for it.

I send him a case of it every so often. My sister-in-law hates it. ;)

baglady Feb 24, 2007 4:44 pm

I eat Target's version of Frosted Mini Wheats almost every day when I'm home. It has much more consistent frosting than the Kellog's version. I like a good amount of Skim milk over it.

I love Quaker Weight Loss Oatmeal (brown sugar) with a splash of skim milk and 2 splendas. I'll have it for lunch sometimes.

I also like cereal as snacks. Sugar Corn Pops (no milk), Fruity Pebbles (usually milk), Golden Grahams, Frosted Flakes, Cap'n Crunch with Crunchberries. Usually I'll buy the Target brand on these too. All healthy choices ;)

When I travel I usually do shredded wheat with raisin bran mixed in.

Sugar Jets. Had to think about that one. Kept my brother so 'jet-propelled' he ran in circles around the living room, dining room and kitchen, until he got dizzy.

Kashi Go Lean. Fruit (banana, pear, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, even Raisins and Walnuts). Soy Milk.

On occasion, i've mixed in any of the Post Great Grains cereals with the Kashi.

Unfortunately impossible to find when traveling - have not found a hotel yet that carries it.

At home, I have to fend off the "vultures" when I fix a bowl. My cats absolutely adore Grape Nuts, so I don't dare set my bowl down unattended for even a second.

pickinp Feb 27, 2007 9:28 am

I love Frosted Mini Wheats, Reeses Puffs, Peanut Butter Captain Crunch. I like Frosted Flakes (especially with cut up banana) and Frosted Cheerios.

Guy Betsy Mar 2, 2007 6:37 pm

Having a wheat-allergy, I'm stuck Kellogs Corn Pops and Rice Krispies! :(

DrivingRain Mar 9, 2007 8:39 am

The limited edition Dino-Pebbles spin-off from Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles was heavenly. Unfortunately, I think they just ran it from 1988-1989 or so...

These days, I have a mix of mostly All Bran (extra fiber) along with All Bran Flakes with Yogurt every weekday morning. :( Sad, but true.

SkeptiCallie Mar 9, 2007 11:46 am

About half the time, cereal for breakfast, as follows:

Microwaved oatmeal, topped with a few spoonfuls of wheat germ. Over this I pour low-fat plain, unsweetened kefir, the very sour kind (Lifeway). If I am out of kefir, I use buttermilk. (No rolling of the eyes, please. ;) )

Sometimes, for variety, I use shredded wheat (unsweetened, of course :) ) instead of oatmeal/wheat germ. With that, I usually opt for buttermilk instead of kefir.

Sometimes--I say this on the grounds that confession is good for the soul ;) -- I have a slice of homemade cornbread (the type with no sugar on it), baked ahead of time and frozen, to be microwaved for breakfast. Over the cornbread, I pour buttermilk. (It's an old Southern dish, one I remember from childhood, although even then no one would have had it for breakfast. Very good, however.)

Yes, I am not joking. This is all very good. :) :)

Occasionally I add fresh blueberries if I have them.

On rare occasions I have corn flakes (eek! all that sugar!) with a banana, but when I do, I have that for a light evening meal, not for breakfast.

It's a free world. . . . :p

BearX220 Mar 9, 2007 11:49 am

The best bowl of cereal ever is Quaker Corn Bran garnished with the Trail Mix variant of Grape Nuts. Quaker Corn Bran is hard to find (yellow box). Quaker Oat Squares will do in a pinch, but the Corn Bran is to die for. I bring some to work with me every day.

Kellogg's Smart Start is excellent also. We used to buy Smart Start for the grownups and Fruity Cheerios for our kid, but when said kid sampled the Smart Start one day he ate all of it, leaving us with the Fruity Cheerios, which take some getting used to.

I'm sorry, I've really tried to like the Kashi cereals but they all taste like rough-cut shards of shirt cardboard to me. Yccch.

Smart Start's name is a kind of a mktg ploy. It does taste great, but it is not very good for you (or so I was reading in CR or some cereal nutrition analysis article). Same goes with the oh-so-addictive tasting Cracklin' Oat Bran.

LOL. I usually crumble the cornbread up into a glass of buttermilk and eat it with a spoon. But, I usually do this as a late-nighter before bed, not for breakfast. :)

My office got those little boxes of Kellogg's cereals and little cartons of milk. We are all now cereal fiends and fight over our favorites. I had burned out on cereal after eating so much for the Kellogg's AA miles, but have found that I enjoy it again.

Our office munches are free. Another topic to discuss.

Socaflyer Mar 10, 2007 6:48 am

I love "Special K with Strawberries", although I'm trying to move away from that to brands that are a little healthier (i.e. less sugar, more fiber). I always try to add fresh fruit to whatever cereal I'm eating and I really appreciate it when hotels have fruit or nuts available to add to the cereal. Summer time is the best - for me, nothing beats fresh berries (especially strawberries) or peaches!

byoung17 Mar 10, 2007 10:43 am

I love plain Cheerios with enough very cold skim milk to cover the cereal. I also like "Old Fashioned" Quaker Oats cooked in the microwave. I like fruit on the side not in my cereals.

TMOliver Mar 10, 2007 10:51 am

In the beginning, soon after filling the void and creating the waters and the earth, the Inspirer of Belief gave us Raisin Bran. Later, having created fruits of all sorts to be borne upon it, he gave unto us Grape Nuts. Having done so, a variey of cheap imitators, false prophets, and evil angels came upon the scene and filled the cereal aisles with the sum of all vanities.

DEK Mar 10, 2007 12:16 pm

I'm going to run out and invest in sugar a.s.a.p.! ;)

I eat Barbara's Organic Grain Shop cereal topped with blueberries. I use skim milk and let it soak up the milk for about 15-30 minutes and then put in some more. The soggier the better!

knighthawks97 Mar 10, 2007 2:11 pm

Reese's Peanut Butter Cup cereal and Frosted Mini-wheats. Also any version of Lucky Charms (store brand or whatever).^

oldpenny16 Mar 10, 2007 2:50 pm

In my office mini boxes of cereals are now bribes. If someone wants to make friends or butter up someone, cereal is it. Nothing else is allowed. You can buy them at the store or obtain them in our kitchen (favorites go fast). Anything with sugar tops the demand list. No one seems to want (or admit to wanting) bran flakes.

smunky Mar 10, 2007 10:48 pm

cocoa krispies, honey nut cheerios, + lucky charms are my favs

Jamoldo Mar 11, 2007 3:27 am

Frosted Flakes (also known as Frosties)
Fruit Loops
Golden Grams
Cornflakes (with milk in Europe, tastes really good for some reason).

zrudeboyz Mar 11, 2007 3:53 am

Favs, not what I eat (don't really buy cereal, but I do love it)

-KIX (not the airport)
-Lucky Charms
-Rice Crispie Treat Cereal (do they still make this, it was basically rice crispie treats in milk)
-Cracklin' Oat Bran (amazingly overpriced, yet delicious)
-Cinnamon Toast Crunch

stut Mar 11, 2007 3:25 pm

Being a fully paid up Scot, I naturally eat porridge (oatmeal). And, of course, the proper way, with salt, not sugar, and a little cream*

* Well, no, not really. I generally end up using the semi-instant, sweet stuff that you put milk & water in and lob it in the microwave. But don't tell anyone!

Here I thought I was the only one who prefers soggy cereal? ^

Raisin Bran and Corn Flakes would be my top choices. Museli works.

Can't handle Cheerios at all - a texture thing I guess.

Anyone remember the days of Booberry and Sir Grapefellow?

I like Grape Nuts (even moreso grapenut pudding!), but I have to nuke them (in milk) for a bit first to get them soft enough to eat.
