Yup, two/three years ago sounds about right.

They were at the Hilo McD's a couple of months ago.

From a business perspective, I look at McDonalds as being very successful in standardizing a product and process and being able to export it around the world. Not as easy as it sounds. I try to check out a local McDonalds in all the countries I visit just as a lark.

It's kind of interesting to see the different menu items. I've found many similar items called different names or versions in different sizes. The only unique items that pop into my head right now are the Croquette in Amsterdam and a green curry burger in Hong Kong.

And I've got to agree with 3timesalady, McDonalds is usually a good bet if you're in need of a free and clean washroom.

 How is it different?

For those uninitiated, the US version is a sausage patty, egg cooked all the way through ( :td: ), slice of American cheese in between slices of an English muffin.

Do you Aussies replace the cheese with Vegemite? :D

The sausage pattie is thinner and more like a slightly spicy burger; the one I tried in Chicago had thicker, juicier (? more fat) and less spicy sausage.... tasted just an intriguing bit different..... :)
The egg and plastic cheese to hold it together were the same!

(And they have a plain English muffin available, with jam or..... Vegemite available at breakfast time!)

Here in Taiwan I do try to avoid them but they do have a great breakfast corn soup and their fried chicken is pretty good too.

They have started an egg custard dessert in competition with KFC that the children love.

There is also a variation of the Quarter Pounder with tomato and lettuce called the Royal TS.[5] The same burger is also available in France, where it is called Royal Deluxe.

this is not true. the Royal TS and the Royal Deluxe are NOT the same, TS is way better. The deluxe contains lettuce, tomatoes a sauce which I don't like - the TS contains lettuce, onions, mayonnaise.

Mc Donalds in Germany sell beer. Tap or bottle depends on the location. Probably also true for other countries in Europe.

at least true for France as well :)

Germany is converting some of the McDonalds restaurants in McCafe where they offer more or less the same Starbucks sells in the US. (different Coffee products, muffins, ...)

The McPizza in Western Canada was quite popular at one point. They stopped it 10 or 15 yrs ago.

Spotted McDick??

Found the poutine on the list incredibly off-putting, but the Feb. issue of Saveur has poutine as one of their 100 favorite foods/drinks, etc. "Quebec's answer to cheese fries...in eateries both fast (McD's?) and fancy."

It may have hung on in Eastern Canada a little longer than that - I can recall having it in southwestern Ontario as late as 1998 or 1999.

They were introduced when we were living in Asia. Probably one of my favorite McD items. ^
