Acceptable frozen pizzas?
 

Since we're talking about the best and worst pizzas. Are there any acceptable frozen pizzas out there - not the flown in from Chicago kind, but from the supermarket case.

I do have to say that I sort of like Stouffers French Bread Pizza, and Whole Foods has one that turns out OK on the grill.

Well, if I had to nominate a frozen pizza, I'd say the Gino's personal pizzas in the yellow packages for 89 cents at the supermarket. My friend makes them for a snack when we're at his place. But he adds ingredients, like extra cheese and pepperoni to them.

I'd say both Souffer's and Red Baron's French Bread pizzas are fairly good.

Has anybody tried Costco's take home and bake pizzas? (yes, I know they're refrigerated and not frozen...)

The wife likes the Lean Cuisine Brick Oven-style frozen pizzas. Her favorite is the Chicken with Roasted Garlic. Before we found these, she used to like the Red Baron single-serving 4-Cheese frozen pizzas.

But, she would prefer non-frozen, I'm sure. ;)

I like the California Pizza Kitchen Garlic Chicken pizza. For thick crust types, the DiGorno isn't bad. I rarely find frozen pizza good enough to buy, though.

Tombstone frozen pizzas are pretty darn good. That said, I'm not a pizza snob (meant in a good way...because I can't spell coneisseur <-- see?) so frozen doesn't bother me.

Trader Joe's ones imported from Italy are really very good (their refrigerated ones, though, are terrible).

DiGiorno's makes a decent one, as far as frozen pizzas go.

I'd rather have a freshly made pizza, but with teenagers at home, there's usually a couple pizzas in the freezer and I will eat a slice now and then. California Pizza Kitchens are the best of the bunch, IMO. Anything else is at least a cut below and I'd rather make a salad than eat most of them. If I'm hungry enough, I'll eat some of the ones with a crust that rises or Stouffers. I can't explain it, but I can also eat those little bagel pizzas.

I bought one of these once for a little get-together to watch a football game. It is very large (barely fit in my oven at the time) and rather delicious. Definitely worth what you pay for one ($7.99?)




On the frozen front, I prefer Freschetta to Digiorno, the crust has a bit of a different flavor that I enjoy. I also enjoy the Tombstone that goes on sale so often, rather delightful for what you pay for it; and memories of Tombstone pizzas growing up.

Here's the trick to eating frozen pizza: Simply understand from the start that it's not pizza, but an entirely different food concept.

With that in mind, and with junk food standards in place rather than the standards of real food, then for a good junk snack I like the Totinos Combination pizzas (often can be had 10 for $10) and I like Totinos Pizza Rolls even better :)

I do have standards. With Totinos Pizza Rolls (which, sadly, aren't on sale as often as the Pizza), I can pretend I'm in St. Louis eating toasted ravioli -- one of life's great treats and hard to find outside of a 50 mile radius of STL.

But just as Smoked Cheddar Processed Cheese Food is not cheese, it is nonetheless yummy -- so long as it's understood that it's simply not in the "cheese" category.

Same with frozen "pizza" [sic]
