Acceptable frozen pizzas?
Since we're talking about the best and worst pizzas. Are there any acceptable frozen pizzas out there - not the flown in from Chicago kind, but from the supermarket case.
I do have to say that I sort of like Stouffers French Bread Pizza, and Whole Foods has one that turns out OK on the grill. |
Frozen?
Eww...ffffrozen...
Well, if I had to nominate a frozen pizza, I'd say the Gino's personal pizzas in the yellow packages for 89 cents at the supermarket. My friend makes them for a snack when we're at his place. But he adds ingredients, like extra cheese and pepperoni to them. I'd say both Souffer's and Red Baron's French Bread pizzas are fairly good. Has anybody tried Costco's take home and bake pizzas? (yes, I know they're refrigerated and not frozen...) Steve :) |
The wife likes the Lean Cuisine Brick Oven-style frozen pizzas. Her favorite is the Chicken with Roasted Garlic. Before we found these, she used to like the Red Baron single-serving 4-Cheese frozen pizzas.
But, she would prefer non-frozen, I'm sure. ;) Sincerely, William R. Sanders Customer Service Coordinator Starwood Preferred Services [email protected] |
I like the California Pizza Kitchen Garlic Chicken pizza. For thick crust types, the DiGorno isn't bad. I rarely find frozen pizza good enough to buy, though.
|
Tombstone frozen pizzas are pretty darn good. That said, I'm not a pizza snob (meant in a good way...because I can't spell coneisseur <-- see?) so frozen doesn't bother me.
|
Trader Joe's ones imported from Italy are really very good (their refrigerated ones, though, are terrible).
|
Portions of the post that previously appeared in this space has been deleted. I would provide you with a reason why, but doing so would likely be against the TOS.
|
DiGiorno's makes a decent one, as far as frozen pizzas go.
|
I'd rather have a freshly made pizza, but with teenagers at home, there's usually a couple pizzas in the freezer and I will eat a slice now and then. California Pizza Kitchens are the best of the bunch, IMO. Anything else is at least a cut below and I'd rather make a salad than eat most of them. If I'm hungry enough, I'll eat some of the ones with a crust that rises or Stouffers. I can't explain it, but I can also eat those little bagel pizzas.

It is very large (barely fit in my oven at the time) and rather delicious. Definitely worth what you pay for one ($7.99?) On the frozen front, I prefer Freschetta to Digiorno, the crust has a bit of a different flavor that I enjoy. I also enjoy the Tombstone that goes on sale so often, rather delightful for what you pay for it; and memories of Tombstone pizzas growing up. |
Here's the trick to eating frozen pizza: Simply understand from the start that it's not pizza, but an entirely different food concept.
With that in mind, and with junk food standards in place rather than the standards of real food, then for a good junk snack I like the Totinos Combination pizzas (often can be had 10 for $10) and I like Totinos Pizza Rolls even better :) |
Totinos?
How old are you, twelve ;) As far as frozen pizza, whatever is on sale, I usually make my own |

There is no acceptable frozen pizza. :td:

Well and pithily put. ^
But just as Smoked Cheddar Processed Cheese Food is not cheese, it is nonetheless yummy -- so long as it's understood that it's simply not in the "cheese" category. Same with frozen "pizza" [sic] |
Look, we all know fresh-baked restaurant or home-made pizza is the best. That's a given. If you don't like frozen pizza, that's perfectly understandable and okay. But with all due respect, why participate in this conversation?
The question here is about the best frozen pizza. We have a few locally-made frozen pizza choices in the Chicago-Milwaukee area that are pretty decent (at least for the genre). As for the national macro-brands, I'd vote for Tombstone thin crust (as opposed to orignal). |
CPK is ok, Palermo (made in Milwaukee of all places) is pretty decent. I like the DiGiorno rising crust.

The only decent frozen pizza I have had in recent years was from Lou Malnati's in Chicago. |

I probably haven't tried more than 2 varieties of CPK (one was chicken, the other cheese), so I base my opinion on those. It's possible I wouldn't like the others. |
My wife and I absolutely love Freschetta frozen pizzas.
we've given up getting carry out or delivery and will go for a freschetta every time! |
DiGiornos is great. I enjoy one now and then
Healthy Choice is awful. I regret trying it. |
Mama Cozzi thin crust extra cheese (Aldi stores in the USA).
|
In the realm of frozen pizzas I have found that Tombstones are okay. I have also found some Home Run Inn pizzas lately at Aldi that are pretty good. I would have to rule out the 89 cent Genos things though. And as BamaVol correctly pointed out - you should not call them pizzas.
|
Another vote for Totinos, can't beat the price. I just add a little extra cheese on top. I eat about 5 a week.
|
HEB's Central Market makes a very good, 4-cheese, wood-fired pizza. But, you won't find it aywhere else.
We keep one in the freezer and add ham and fresh tomatoes for emergency fixes! |
I second the vote for Palermo's. Super thin, crisp crust. The Margarita is actually quite good as far as frozen pizzas go. I buy a package of three at Costco for like $8. Good value.
|
I'm glad to see some other Totinos fans out there! I love it extra crispy. My husband can't stand it, but my three year old can :)
I also like the Lean Cuisine French Bread Cheese Pizza. I haven't had a real Stouffer's French Bread Pizza since college so I tell myself the Lean Cuisine tastes the same ;) |
DiGiorno is my only choice.
|
haha cool topic.
I think the CPK barbeque chicken pizza is great. Tastes almost as good as if you got it in the restaurant. Freshetta's pizzas are good too. Oh and my mom once bought one from Costco...it was pretty good, can't remember the brand but it was either their own or some small company. Other than that there aren't many frozen pizzas I like. |
Not a frozen food person, but I've heard a few brands of Pizzas sold by Costco
are pretty good. Just a word of mouth.. never had em. (or didnt know they were frozen) |
Here in Madison, WI there have to be at least 10 different brands of frozen pizza to choose from, most with at least two crust choices, and all with a variety of topping choices. You can often find at least one brand on sale for 5 or 6 for $10.
Personally, DiGiorno is at the bottom of my list; too much crust, not enough toppings. My fav, probably a rising crust version of Jack's or Red Baron (half the crust of a DiGiorno). |

I like Amy's organic pizza - it has fresh toppings and doesn't taste frozen. I find it at Whole Foods and also the organic/health food section of my local supermarket. There's also another organic one that is tasty with roasted vegetables and chipotle sausage - the brand name is Fontera or something like that.

The only one I will still buy is the CA Pizza Kitchen range, particularly the Garlic Chicken - looks like that's a popular one! If I want cheapo snacks then I'll also thumbs up Totinos, but never ever as a meal replacement! |
