Anyone see this article in the Wall Street Journal about scotch vs. bourbon?
Scotch on the Rocks While Bourbon Is Booming Bourbon distillers are kicking their Scottish rivals in the kilt. Global exports of Scotch whisky fell 7% last year, as American drinkers continued to switch in droves to bourbon and other American whiskeys. It was the steepest drop-off in Scotch exports since 1998 and only the third annual decline in 30 years. Scotch sales to the U.S., the liquor’s biggest export market, fell 9%, according to British government statistics released Wednesday. |
graph suggests scotch was inflated in 2013, at least in the US
i wonder if inflated in 1997, and what 3rd year in past 30 was anyone know source? ill take a look at some point edit > indeed inflated in 1997 followed by recession in 1998 http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1...merica-decline 1998 declined 8 percent from a record 1997 level, as economic turmoil in Southeast Asia and Latin America restricted shipments to 907 million bottles, Scottish Whiskey Association figures showed. The biggest part of the shortfall came from Asia, which accounts for 63 percent of export volume and 72 percent by value of Scotch exports. The SWA reported that 1998 Scotch export volumes slipped to 254.2 million liters of pure alcohol from 1997's 276.6 million. By value, exports fell 15 percent to $3.31 billion from $4 billion. http://www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/news.../#.VSIGn2aolqE http://www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/news-publications/ http://www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/medi...cal_report.pdf |
I used to own a cigar bar & I noticed the movement > 6 yrs ago. Even a lot of my Japanese customers were not only drinking, but knowledgeable about Bourbon & Rye. In the past they were predicable - Scotch, Scotch, Scotch, Scotch ..............................

I'm sticking with my dream of an ice cream truck as I would rather my customers were girls in bikinis. Not enough of them in a cigar bar.

Highland Park ice ball is made from the same water used to make the Macallan scotch so it contains the same pH levels and “it doesn’t fight with your scotch, it marries it nicely,” according to our bartender Wahid. whiskey stones are perfect for bringing the temperature down 1 to 2 degrees |
Never trust a bartender named "Wahid" :p

I've been to this one: http://www.whiskiesoftheworld.com/wow-expo-sf-schedule Never again. It's a beat down. Free tix or not, the 3 day hangover isn't worth it.
I asked for a carafe of water and a spit cup. I have the feeling the latter request sort of scandalized the hosts, William Grant & Sons Distillery. I guess it’s just not done at Scotch tastings. Balvenie’s US Brand Ambassador...Sam Simmons sits down and we chat about how he got into whisky. It turns out he writes a pretty technical whisky blog and has an evident love for the beverage even beyond the brands he promotes. |
Pretty good article in Gentleman's Gazette:
The Scotch Whisky Guide When I was asked to write a guide on Scotch whisky, it was as if the skies opened and the angels sang. For many years, Scotland has produced some of the finest whiskies the world has ever seen. As such, I have come to not only appreciate the complexity and intricacies of a fine bottle of Scotch, but I’ve developed an adoration, nay, an obsession with Scotch whisky and its continual pursuit of perfection. It is my distinct privilege to have the opportunity to share my love of Scotch with you in this primer that will focus primarily on the world’s most beloved single malt Scotch whiskies. <snip> |
