Jura, most definitely.

They often say that whisky/whiskey drinkers move towards peat as the drink over the years, and that certainly was true for me. I now drink Lagavulin 16 as if it's going out of style--and I've got a collection of over 600 bottles from almost every distillery in Scotland (as I prefer the intensity of single malt).

My local liquor store is going out of business. :(
Mrs BamaVol discovered this when she stopped by Saturday morning to buy me a birthday present. I went back in the afternoon only to discover the shelves mostly bare. I had hopes for a couple bottles of top shelf scotch at 25% off. I ended up with a bottle of Clynelish 14 and popped it open for a taste Sunday night. A little saltier than I like, but overall a nice bottle. I will probably make one last visit and grab everything that I recognize in the scotch, bourbon and rum aisles but I might be in for disappointment. At the very least, I will score a lot of craft beer I've never tried at 20% off retail. For whatever reason, the liquor is moving faster than the beer. |

That's absurd. That bottle looks like it's about to fall out! Then what do you have? Liquor and broken glass spilled all over the floor. I pack my bottle inside the bag, nestled amongst soft clothing, so it can survive being knocked around a bit in transit.

Well I'm not really dumb enough to travel like this, it was just a photo op for this thread. I was about to board a train and so I hand carried the precious liquid on board with me.

If I was boarding that train I would definitely have tried to sit next to you ;)

Picked up a Laphroaig Cairdeas (2014 bottling) a couple of days ago. Mostly leather with some smoke and peat. It's cask strength and I've been experimenting with adding water but, so far, I've been unable to tease out much else.

Anyone try the new Ardbeg Supernova release? $170 is a bit more than I'm looking to spend, but I was wondering how it was.

Recommendations?
My house has been scotchless for far too long. :(
I was thinking I'd just buy a bottle of Chivas, since it's cheap and quite decent for the price. My favorite single malts are Oban, Macallan, and Glenrothes - so, Highland malts, in other words. I don't like the Islay malts, which taste like liquid smoke. What do people recommend? |
Cheap & excellent, great everyday stuff - The Black Grouse: http://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies...grouse-whisky/
|
Is Macallan 12 really that expensive? It can't be more than 40 or 50 $. If I wanted cheap, Chivas isn't the worst.
|
Glenmorangie, Balvenie, and Aberlour come to mind for affordable and excellent quality highland/speyside single malts.
