Telephone literally translates to pretty much the same thing. It's from the Greek tele (far) and phone (sound). Televisions are 'far sees', and we have many other 'far' words in English: telegraph, telegram, telepathy, telemetry, etc.

That is interesting. If I know Greek as well as I know German and Yiddish, I would have realized the derivation. I guess a Greek grandmother who fist learned some English as a mature adult might behave exactly the same way as did my yiddische bubbe.

If you are going to ask people to not talk on cell phones, you need to ask them to not TALK at all (which is actually what the Amtrak Quiet Car asks).

The few Chicago theater groups we see make announcements to turn one's cell phone to vibrate & not take the call during a performance.

Amazing that they have to make this type of announcement but every year or so, some a$$hole has an inane conversation during the performance.
