Telephone literally translates to pretty much the same thing. It's from the Greek tele (far) and phone (sound). Televisions are 'far sees', and we have many other 'far' words in English: telegraph, telegram, telepathy, telemetry, etc.
That is interesting. If I know Greek as well as I know German and Yiddish, I would have realized the derivation. I guess a Greek grandmother who fist learned some English as a mature adult might behave exactly the same way as did my
yiddische bubbe.
