Hi everyone! I have a craving for Weetbix by Sanitarium, an Australian breakfast cereal (not Weetabix from the UK).

Anyone know a reliable place where I could purchase it? I'm located in Chicago.

I have seen Wheetabix at some Whole Foods stores. Otherwise try a gourmet international food type of store (I am sure Chicago has several of these). Have you tried searching on the internet?

I see you live in the Chicago area. Treasure Island grocery stores usually carry it.

...Sorry--just reread and saw you were looking for the Australian Weetbix. I'm not sure if TI carries it, but it's worth a shot. They have a large selection of imported foods.

I would suggest looking in the International sections of food stores as well. I have definitely seen them around. Another option is to simply do a search on the internet and find a place that will ship them to you. I also wonder if some of the larger wholesale stores like Sam's Club, Costco, etc. has Wheetabix...anyone know?

I have little trouble finding Weetabix in the Giant Foods chain of grocery stores here in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. It's the Canadian, not the Australian version but I can't tell a difference.

The earlier suggestion to try the International aisle instead of the cereal aisle is a good one, too.

Weetabix IS NOT the same as Weetbix... You can get Weetabix at loads of stores, but I've never seen a store that carried Weetbix.

IMHO you can make a pretty good substitute for Weetbix by soaking a brillo pad in warm water, to which you've added a dollop of Vegemite. All-in-all, I'd rather tuck into a couple of Tim Tams washed down with a cold glass of Milo! ^

Joking aside, back in 1997 was the last year that the Sydney Royal Easter Show was held at Moore Park (presently the site of Fox Studios). The next year the Show moved to the new Sydney Showground site at Homebush Bay. At the time of the 1997 Show, my family and I were enjoying a stay in Sydney at an apartment at the Oakford City West on Missenden Road in Camperdown, near the University of Sydney... Sanitarium Health Food Company, the makers of Weetbix, were sponsoring the weightlifting events at the Easter Show and had reserved a number of apartments at the Oakford as well as a number of floors of rooms at an adjacent hotel to house muscle men and women from all over Oceania that were competing in the Easter Show festivities and events. Every morning, before the participants were bussed to Moore Park, they gathered for breakfast at the hotel. I met a Bloke in the dining room there one morning while the athletes were eating and I never saw so much of the sponsor's product being devoured in one place... The breakfast table teemed with displays of Weetbix, Hi Bran, Puffed Wheat and all types of Sanitarium products. I saw guys looking like replicated Arnold Schwartzeneggers eating 8-10 Weetbix at a time washed down with concoctions of beverages they'd mix up from fruit and supplements in a bank of blenders. My breakfast companion made an interesting observation that the hotel's sewage system must be made of solid steel with all the fiber that went into those guys working it's way South! Being the wimp that I am, I tried a number of times to eat Weetbix in Australia or even Weetabix here in the USA, in hopes that it would make me bulk up like the muscle men I saw in Sydney that year, but I just can't get past the lack of taste! The Weetabix sold here in the USA is made in Canada and distributed by Barbara's Bakery, a company that markets brands like Puffins Cereals and other health food grain products. The only place outside of Australia or New Zealand that I've seen Weetbix offered on the hotel breakfast buffet was in Hong Kong. I've seen Weetabix throughout many other places in the world.

Just in case a few of you haven't discerned, the two products are quite different and are unrelated other than sharing a name that's almost the same. Weetabix is a British brand.

Weet-bix is made by Sanitarium and is the older of the 2 brands. Sanitarium claims to be wholly Australian-owned and is affiliated with the 7th Day Adventist church.

For whatever reason, I find the Austrlian version more filling than the British one.

I've had both cereals and I fully understand your craving for Weet-bix. I just love the texture of this Aussie cereal because I find that it doesn't disintegrate in milk as much as its British cousin. I find it crunchier and much tastier and wish I could get some in the UK. Gorgeous!

Amazingly I found it in a store in a Chicago suburb this weekend. Sunset foods (an upscale grocery store) has an imported foods section, and carries this product.

Check out Ebay...You can find anything there. I have purchased some specialty foods there before.
