Crocodile/Alligator Meat

Anyone with experience in tasting these exotic reptile cuisines? Heard they are indeed high in protein. Are they red or white meat? Do they taste more like beef or chicken?

All I know is Crocodile meat is part of the Aussie dining experience while Alligator is served in Cajun country.

I ate crocodile meat many years ago. It is definitely white meat. Definitely not like beef, but not really like chicken either. I found it more like dry swordfish.

I've tried alligator fritters down in St. Pete Beach, FL. They were more like chicken.

Had crocodile meat in South Africa.

Sort of like white meat chicken, but chewier. Dont see the point of eating it really, unless your croc ate all your chickens.

P.S. Ostrich tastes like beef, but with the consistency of venison. No big deal either.

I had gator in Florida. I was not impressed. I found it gamey and chewey. I still prefer cow, buffalo or ostrich.

'Gator - White, chewy meat, best breaded and fried in small pieces. Looks like chicken, but like most reptiles, no notable flavor although some claim a hint of fishiness.

Not near as good as rattlesnake, but the final product is less identifiable with the source.

Ditto...a bit chewy like squid or cuttlefish, similar consistency as well. You can get it here in Houston at some cajun places.

I had it once in thailand long ago, and more recently in this year's taste of chicago. It tasted dry. Maybe its just not cooked well, but I think I'll pass on this in the future.

There used to be (maybe still is?) a place in Pittsburgh, Kaya in the market district, that had alligator served satay-like on a stick with an interesting sauce. Quite good. The trick is that it has to be tenderized as it's quite tough.

They barbeque Croc (and many other wild animals) quite well at Carnivor in Nairobi. One of my most favorite restaurants in the world.

A good way to try various "exotic" meats is to order a package from Exotic Meats. They offer packages with 1 lb. packs of different meats. A great way to try the meats prior to spending a fortune in a restaurant.
