The place that stands out in my mind was Moose's in Kalispell. It's a hole in the wall bar and I think they sell pizza. When I was there in '97 the business seller I was dealing with said "you gotta go there while you're here....if not just for a beer."

So on his rec I stopped by in the evening and ordered a miller lite, throwing a $5 bill on the counter. I got $4.10 in change! A draft was only $.90...I couldn't believe it!

I was in Kalispell last month. Can't say that I had a memorable meal while there. I did like the Hampton Inn though.

Whitefish

Great area!

I was in Whitefish in 2001 and seem to remember the following being good:

Tupelo Grille (406) 862-6136
17 Central Ave
Lunch or Dinner

Grouse Mountain Lodge (406) 862-3000
2 Fairway Dr
Upscale for dinner (on golf course)

Buffalo Cafe (406) 862-2833
514 3rd St
Breakfast

Have fun! And don't forget to enjoy Glacier National Park!

I second Moose's! When I lived in Calgary, we spent a lot skiing time in the Kalispell and Whitefish area.

Great pizza and a crazy atmosphere that can only exist there! ^

Cafe Max

I really enjoy Cafe Max in downtown Kalispell. It is really very good. I have always been very happy with my fish. One complaint - the sides always seem to be the same - some garlic mash with 3 bean pods, a fried polenta half moon, and a half a tomato stuffed with bread crumbs and pesto (last 7 seafood meals had this presentation).

The service is very friendly - the decor, not so great. I would definetly recommend Cafe Max though.

I have tried Painted Horse (directly across street from Cafe Max) for lunch and was not that impressed.

Just my $0.02.

Just returned today from Kalispell.
I did have a good meal at Cafe Max, and a fair to good meal at Showtyme in Big Fork. Sorry I missed Mooses's

Not really about dining, but I just saw a documentary on PBS about the battle in Kalispell between the environmentalists and their opposition. It was really ugly and nasty. I wonder if one runs into any of that during a casual visit.
