Try Parnell Road in Parnell, there are a dozen restaurants to choose from, several quite good (the rest OK), so easy to find something that appeals. Auckland is not the best place to find what you are looking for (they think KFC is a great delicacy). Rural NZ does have some great, cheap and unique food but it isn't near Auckland.

Welcome to FT GDLambert.
You'll find a lot of trip recommendations for NZ in the Australia and South Pacific forum http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=461 as well in Trip Reports http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=177. There seem to be a number of residents who follow those fora. When I visited several years ago, I found a ton of good info in those.
