Most of the Chinese food is found around the Kearny Mesa area now; we enjoy the food at Jasmine, 4609 Convoy St., 858-268-0888 (don't think there's a website), and a tiny place near Jasmine, Dumpling Inn, 858 268-9638.
Our Italian food is usually pizza, Filippi's is good, many locations, including 1747 India Street, which is San Diego's 'Little Italy'.

Whenever I visit my dear friend in San Diego, she will haul me off to EMERALD Chinese restaurant. Not that I don't appreciate Chinese food coming from Singapore... but it's just my friend doesn't have anybody else to go to have Chinese with so I'm always her eating buddy...
You'll have to call directory assistance for the phone number and address. It's also in the Kearney Mesa area but closer to town than JASMINE. I prefer EMERALD though.
Try some of the 'neighbourhood' restaurants ... like ADAMS AVENUE CAFE, KENSINGTON CAFE, PARK CAFE... or the restaurant in BALBOA PARK... I forget the name.
For best desserts anywhere... go to EXTRAORDINARY DESSERTS on Fifth Avenue.
You going for the lawyers' convention next week?

Filippi's India Street Friday night is the place to be.
Red sauce Italian and very good. Cheap, too! No reservations, a line out the door but it moves fast. Some parking in the back, on the trolley line.
China Max in the Kearny Mesa area is also fantastic.
They have all the weird stuff as well as some Americanized things for people like me
Reservations a good idea, plenty of parking.

There are tons of very authentic Vietnamese noodle shops in the Linda Vista/Kearny Mesa area but I'm not familiar with them.
