Stag's Leap Cabernets from 13 vineyards
Got this in an e-mail today
It's not inexpensive at 850 a case with only 300 cases, but if you are into cabs from that little corner of Napa, it may be something you want to look into. I have to go get the change out of the couches to get my $850.
I'm guessing there is some great cellering potential in that box, so I may have to buy two, one to drink now, one for a few years down the road.
The Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association is proud to release its annual Appellation Collection, the only mixed case offered from an American Viticultural Area. Comprised of one Cabernet Sauvignon from each of the Association’s 13 member wineries, this unique “Vintners’ Dozen” provides an exciting opportunity to explore the appellation and taste the lush fruit and soft tannins that are hallmarks of the Stags Leap District. The appellation — the place itself, the terroir — produces Cabernets that impart power and grace, wines that are layered in character and flavor yet uniquely supple and silky. It’s what we mean when we say the wines are “Rock Soft.”

That's a fascinating mixed case. I think it's a good idea for the California Cabs, actually. So many people express preferences for Rutherford or Oakville or SLD. Good way to get all your favorites at once.
Honestly, at $850 for a case ... that doesn't, at first, strike me as completely out of line. I'm not familiar with all the producers, though. Pine Ridge's SLD has shot up in price since the 1999, which got rave reviews. I'm still sitting on a bottle of it.
When I was out in Napa back in June, I was seriously disappointed in the 2001 Cabs. I thought they were wildly uneven and, for the most part, pretty mediocre. Darioush blew me away, as did the Caymus Special Selection (yeah, big surprise there!). But for the most part, I was looking for a standout vintage and didn't find one. (Unrelated aside ... I found much better luck with the Russian River Valley Pinots. Bless Pinot Noir!)
