Consider Marina del Rey instead.

You might want to consider MDR instead. It's a great setting on very scenic marina, and the same distance (but opposite direction) from LAX. Despite the name Manhattan BEACH, there really isn't anything dining wise on the beach.

Highly recommended in MDR would be Cafe del Rey (http://www.savvydiner.com/details.php?r=247 or review at http://www.epinions.com/rest-Restaur...l-Cafe_Del_Rey).

Thanks for the suggestions. I have done the Santa Monica, Venice and Del Ray area a few times and am interested in trying the Manhattam Beach area.

Manhattan Coolers on Manhattan Beach Blvd. Good place on the strip, good food and atmosphere.

Or my favorite , whose name has slipped my mind, a coffee shop like place, on the corner of Manhattan Beach Blvd and Manhattan Ave - has outside dining so you can watch the people go by and is reasonably priced with good food ( around $10 a person)

jan_az, that place is no more. also, manhattan cooler's switched to shark's cove earlier this year; upscale sports bar.

cafe pierre is quite nice on manhattan beach blvd (and i'll put it up against the marina places - like cafe del rey - which i also like).

there are a # of places in manhattan beach that are fab (to the person posting saying they're not - i'm assuming you haven't been to m.b. in a while). just depends on lunch or dinner, as some are only open for din-din.

anyway, to OP, feel free to PM me for suggestions. i rarely check this forum & was just surfing through today.

I would echo the Cafe del Rey suggestion. I just had dinner there on an L.A. stopover. There is also the Banana Factory which is just around the corner from the Cafe del Rey.

I have also been to several eateries in Manhattan Beach while on L.A. stopovers. There is a McCormick & Schmick restaurant there, and also a PF Chang's. They are both right across the street from each other. There is also a sushi bar in the theater complex there next to the PF Chang's.

There are a # of places on Manhattan Beach Blvd or Manhattan Ave if you want more of the 'beach' atmosphere as opposed to just chains (although I like the chains mentioned).

Cafe Pierre, Michi, Talia's, Mangiamo's, Beaches, Rockfish Tavern, The Kettle, Shark's Cove.

Since you've done the Marina before & are interested in MB, I'd pick one in downtown MB since it gives you more of the atmosphere etc.

Thanks for all the input.

We had a fun lunch at Beaches in Manahattan Beach. It is right next to the pier which gave a fun view and a very good cold glass of Hefeweizen beer. It was white table cloth and the salad and oyster poor boy were really good. It is an easy 10 minute drive to LAX after lunch.

We also had a a Sunday early dinner at Cafe del Ray before catching a flight on Sunday. It was a fabulous dinner. It will certainly be on my list on my next trip to LA.

I heard that Manhattan Coolers has been replaced by a sports bar, is that true? I live in Long Beach but have not been to MB in a year or so. I enjoyed that place.

One of the best Italian restaurants in the US was at Manhattan Beach, and apparently still is (just did a web search). I used to fly to LAX once a week and would have lunch at Talia's ... many years ago. A superb place, dirt cheap with remarkable food (and after dozens of meals not one that disappointed). Haven't been there in years, but if it is 1/4 as good as it was it would still be the best restaurant within 10 miles of LAX. Now I'm going to have to make a special trip (the restaurant was named after the owner's daughter, perhaps she is running it now?).

Will be eating at Talia's this weekend, making a special trip to LA from NY just for this (courtesy of cheap airfares and free upgrades on AA). It might even be cost effective (cost of dinner+airfare is less than cost of dinner in Manhattan, certainly less if including a night's hotel). And better than any of the NY Italian places, if Talia's is still true to form. Can't believe I completely forgot about this place (and I've never had dinner there before, only dozens of lunches).
