One vote for MASTROS in Beverly Hills

Though I know there is one in or around Phoenix. Yes, chain, but darn good food, IMHO. Great atmosphere and even better service. The fish, on those off nights where you can't eat steak for like the sixth day in a row, is so good you feel that you're getting two helpings of solid grub.

for those who come to LA and have a wad of cash to spend (think Business ) I will be more than happy to take an FT group (I'd be on my dime, have no fear )

Still looking forward to my first taste of Argentinian beef (maybe this year) but in the meantime would recommend the cattle country of southwest Colorado and the Hamilton Chop House, an independent a few miles north of Durango:

Thanks in part to this thread and to the Argentine Beef versus American Beef thread, I definitely look forward to my first taste of Argentinian (or is it Argentine?) beef this autumn in Buenos Aires, where it will be springtime...

Indeed... guess I'm still traumatized by the canned/tinned Argentine corned beef that ended up in my sandwiches at one time in my life so I emphasize the tinny part of the name.

Best time is January

I think January is the best time to be in Buenos Aires. The city is alive as it is vacation time, warm weather and abundance of good food and beautiful people. Expect to see nice steak at a local parrilla and sit out and relax by an outdoor cafe in recolleta, or head to San Telmo, and have peanuts and cold beer. If it is MLK weekend, I might just join you

I kind of feel like it's my mission in life to find out where the best steak in the world is. So far, I can't say that the best steak in the U.S. is found outside of Chicago. I've found the NYC steakhouses enormously overrated.

For my money, I've never found anything to beat the original State Street Morton's in Chicago. It's always just a half-notch above the others.

Of course, that said, I'm still waiting for my pilgrimage to Bern's in Tampa. I've always wanted to go there, and I've got this notion in my head that if anyplace can beat the original Morton's, it's Bern's. But we'll just have to see about that.

It's a terrific thing, though, that you can get well-aged prime meat all over the country now. Having a really sublime beef experience, though, is still hit-or-miss, I've found. But when you get that tang of the perfectly aged steak ... well, it's all worth it.

Aussie Beef

No discussion about steak should exclude Australian Beef, some of the finest free range, grass fed, hormone free beef grown anywhere in the world

Taste wise it is similar to that of Argentina, given comparable climatic conditions. Beef from the southern parts of the country have high British breed content, well suited to high marbling levels.

For those who visit Australia, the key steakhouses to dine at are:

In Melbourne
Vlados Charcoal Grill
61 Bridge Rd
Richmond VIC 312
Tel: (03) 9428-5233

In Brisbane:
Cha Cha CHar
Eagle Street Pier,
Waterfront Pl
Brisbane

In Sydney:
Kingsleys
The Wharf
9 Cowper Wharf Rd
Woolloomooloo NSW 2011

Thumbs down Gibson's Chicago

Frankly I was very disappointed in this place. i found it ridiculously expensive, the service mediocre. The steak was overdone and barely seemed above the quality of an Outback Steakhouse chain. I ordered my steak Medium Rare and it came back practically Medium Well. It was so noisy I couldn't here my dinner companion seated across me at a very tiny table. I would not waste money here again.

prncess674 , I'm sorry you had such a negative experience at Gibsons. I've never had a bad meal there, and yes I'm very picky about my steak. Have always had great service there too, but I'm also in there at least a couple times/month and usually am able to get the same server (my colleagues and I always ask for him when booking the table) so that probably helps. It is loud in there...guess I'm just used to it now after almost 9 years of it.

Curious...were you at the Gold Coast location or were you at the one near ORD (I believe it's in the Doubletree)? I'll only vouch for the one in the city as I've never eaten at the one in the 'burbs.

Thumbs up to the Buenos Aires Grill

Now that the regulations have changed, they are using Argentinian beef and it is just amazing.

I agree with alanw. The BA Grill has become a favorite Meating place for this FTer and his Seattle based friends. Also, Missy's Meat capacity is legendary!
