Anyone been to Hall's Chophouse in Charleston, SC? My mind was blown, but admittedly, I haven't been to many of the places mentioned here. I will be hard pressed to admit to any chain taking the crown - I just can't see the quality being consistent enough.

I'm a big fan of Bern's. it's definitely the best in this local area anyway. The whole experience is just amazing, not just the steak.
I'm a big fan of the Spudder in Tulsa, OK. There aren't many good reasons to go to Oklahoma, but if you do go for some reason it's worth a stop. It's a very casual dive sort of place, but the steaks really are out of this world. |
I used to like the standard Vegas places like Cut, etc... but have recently started to enjoy a local New American place (Cunninghams) that uses a local, organic, grass fed NY strip that's marbled like prime. I'm not even into the organic stuff but I feel like this particular beef is like stumbling onto King Salmon vs. that farmed stuff.
I've had all the cuts (including top caps) of Japanese, Australian and domestic wagyu, 6 month dry-aged prime (rib-eye and strip), been to all the chains... and this may be my favorite. |

Peter Luger's in NY is my go-to for late night steak. I enjoy Morton's and Fat Cow (Japanese purebred wagyu) in Singapore, but avoid CUT which is a way overpriced. And for value for money, you can't beat any packed parilla in Brazil or Argentina where they grill the meat over wood and charcoal in front of you.

The Butchers Shop - Sandton, South Africa (just outside Jo'burg) Unbeatable.

I did not see anybody mention South Africa. While not well known for its meat, and the beef is probably not as good as the Argentine variety, the meat and beef I have had there has been excellent. Much better than anything I've ever had in the US and definately Europe.
Some good restaurants I've been to: -Butcher Shop and Grill in Sandton (popular with business types and they prepare great biltong) -The Cradle north of Fourways (they serve some fantastic venison/game, and the location itself is worth a detour) -The Grillhouse also in Sandton

Beef is quite good in South Africa, it is mostly grass fed and leaner than in the US (this seems to be a southern hemisphere thing, Australia, Argentina and S.A. all share this approach to beef, and I do prefer it over the US feedlot approach).
The Butcher shop is good, but there is a similar restaurant in Pretoria which is a lot better. Unfortunately I cannot remember its name, but it is well known (I asked my driver from the Sheraton). I will be in South Africa later this week; so I certainly want to try some of these steakhouses. Also — as Uruguay seems to have comparable beef to Argentina — would any of the neighboring countries of South Africa similarly have beef close in quality? |
I like Peter Lugers.
Too bad for me being based in Asia-Pacific, it makes a really really long trip! |

Is the information listed above still relevant?
I will be in South Africa later this week; so I certainly want to try some of these steakhouses. The Butcher Shop is located right in Mandela Square, thus one can have dinner, shop, etc. all in one outing without leaving the mall. Bull Run is on a street by itself for the most part, and in the evening not a lot was happening on that end. YMMV. Bull Run website - http://www.thebullrun.co.za Neither however, compare to Berns in my hometown :D. Not even close. |

Multiple reports on here of poor experiences at US Morton's'. As for me, I can say I've had consistent hit or miss experiences.
That said, I've booked a res next week for Morton's Hong Kong - good trip advisor reviews - anyone been there lately who can report on quality/service? Cheers |
If you're ever in Montréal, QC, Moishes Steakhouse is excellent. One of the top steakhouses I've been to anywhere. Top notch service and food was perfect.

The original Shula’s in Miami Lakes has been one of my favorite steakhouses; but I have not been there in years, so I cannot vouch for its quality today — especially after it became a chain of restaurants. I will most likely be in Tampa this fall; and Bern’s is one steakhouse which I have not yet tried... |

Cu placere! If you do end up dining at Bern's, be sure to save room (and time) for the "Dessert Room". Quite an experience up there.
Should I have said mulțumesc instead of thank you? Ce mai faci? Foarte bine?!? |

Yes, unfortunately. Since Morton's was acquired by Landry's, we have stopped attending (although, in fairness, it did seem things were going downhill before that).

I just dined at The Grillhouse — the original one in Rosebank and not the one in Sandton. I ordered the filet with a pre-cooked weight of 500 grams, or approximately 18 ounces. It was excellent all by itself; but I just had to try some monkey gland sauce to go with it. I liked that, too.
I intend on trying out The Butcher Shop & Grill in Sandton tomorrow; and I will think about trying The Bull Run while I am here in South Africa... |

That said, I've booked a res next week for Morton's Hong Kong - good trip advisor reviews - anyone been there lately who can report on quality/service? Cheers Service overall was very good, as was the decor etc. I don't recall what I had for the appetizers, I think it was the crab cakes and something else seafood related, both of which were also very good. The steaks were good, but nothing to write home about though. This one I guess it depends on your personal tastes. I had the slightly 'cheaper' steak where as my 'boss' had the more expensive one (again I can't remember what it was, probably a US grain fed or the like). Mine was more tender and flavours more balanced, whereas hers was a bit on the salty side. I skipped desserts because we weren't big fans. The restaurant was quite full, with a mixture of other people celebrating special events, or tourists. I haven't been to the other Mortons', although for this price range, I'd say it was in the middle of the pack. |

On a similar note, and because I've seen Bern's mentioned many times in this thread.... check out the tentative plans for TPA to get "Vintage Bern's" a casual version of the steakhouse. http://www.tampabay.com/news/busines...irport/2219410 Won't be the same as the original, but it sure will make the airport more fun! |
Question re: Palm steakhouse.
Here, it's unanimous that they are great. Yet the reviews on Denver's location are decidedly mixed (Yelp, Urbanspoon, Opentable). Can any here give a spotrep on the Denver Palm? Any help would be appreciated. |

Never had anything compare with Hussar Grille in Camps Bay just outside Cape Town.
If you read the reviews on Trip advisor you'd say no place could be that good. It is!!! |

http://local-grill.co.za/ My second favourite in Joburg was always Wombles which really looked the part and do great on the bone specials but in my view wasn't quite as good. Compared to those two I found the Grillhouse meat lacking flavour. |

I believe it was mentioned far upthread, but for me in the DC area, Ray's the Steaks in Arlington is my choice. The affordable prices alone really make a difference--but of course the steaks are sublime.

Disappointing experience at Morton's for me, as well, recently. I went about 2 weeks ago, expecting the same service and presentation I remember from years back. There was no presentation of the steaks, as before. Our waitress was a little young girl, cracking jokes about drinking (inappropriate to me for the type of dining experience I was expecting). The steak was subpar, very tender (I got the Cajun ribeye) but not as spicy as I would have liked for Cajun and swimming in grease (or butter...but whatever it was, the steak was literally wet). The appetizers were good (Lobster cocktail and crabcake) but the sides tasted like they were frozen and maybe the "chef" added a seasoning or two after it was zapped in the micro (case in point, the creamed spinach had nutmeg).
Next stop for me to visit next-Peter Luger's. |

Ever try the Gordon Ramsay in Las Vegas?

I've been to Luger's in Brooklyn a few times to meet friends who live around there. I just don't get it. The steaks are good, but not 3x the price good.

Booked Caesars for a business lunch. I heard that this location in Calgary is a top notch steakhouse. My client even asked to eat there. Therefore, we'll go and I'll try it out for the very first time. Another friend recommended this restaurant in Willow Park Calgary. I guess there are a few locations here in Calgary.
I've always liked Ruth's Chris.. Had actually what I thought was the best steak I've ever had at the Lahaina location on Maui this past summer. Decor could have been up to snuff a bit, and seems there were some flies when the sun was setting. Had a few candles going. But the steak was unreal. :D There's a 'new' one called Hy's (new because they had an establishment in Calgary, left, and now they're back). |
Berne's Steakhouse in Tampa is my favorite. The food, the extensive wine cellar, the Dessert room etc. Wonderful!
Also like Shula's in Orlando at the Dolphin resort at Walt Disney World. |

I'll throw in a vote for DONS de la Nature in Tokyo. By far, the best steak I have ever had in my life.

I've never really had steak in the Basque region before - do you have any particular recommendations? Are these steakhouses or broader restaurants that do a great steak?
and outside that area just had a great one from Madrid's Pelotari both are typical rustic old restaurants with a convivial atmosphere. the first you can be seated eating a steak next to all the locals standing up at the bar for pintxos. they dont ask you how its done - they cook to their liking and slice it for plating. the steaks come more rare than anything ive ever seen - blood red in center. very yellow fat indicative of cattle's diet. most similar to a bistecca fiorentina couldnt get a reservation for , but michelin-starred Extebarri is notable for its chef elaborately making his own charcoal from fresh cords. thats how dedicated he is http://i.imgur.com/GcDXCsQl.jpg |
Favorite steakhouses:
Montreal, Canada - Le Queue de Cheval. Had a softball-sized Filet with goat cheese on top. Miami Lakes, FL - Shula's. Had the Porterhouse. Loved it. Arlington, VA - Ray's the Steaks. Loved the Porterhouse, got the larger size. Seattle/Bellevue, WA - Daniel's Broiler. Had Filet Mignon a la Oscar. One of the best steaks I ever ate. Seattle, WA - Metropolitan Grill. Enjoyed the Filet there as well. They offered 1/2 Wagyu (sp?) and 1/2 American. Both were delicious. |
