We were also somewhat disappointed in Cabaņa Las Lilas (and have subsequently read the same elsewhere) and found the place next door (already forgot the name) to be superior. In truth, we spent the better part of a week between Buenos Aires and Mendoza and actually found pork rather than beef to be the outstanding meat.

It's all a matter of personal taste, and I concede that grass-fed Argentine beef must be healthier than ours, but we four (we two plus a restaurateur brother-in-law and his wife) still preferred our cruise ship's USDA dry-aged Prime beef. A chacun son goût and all that...

We did enjoy great food and wine in Argentina, including some very good beef, and hope to return. ^

Was in Tampa last week and tried Bern's again. As good as ever. Quite possibly the best restaurant experience I've ever had.

Was just talking about Berns with a colleague a couple days ago. I was there about 10 years ago and still remember it. I'm not sure I'd say it was the best steakhouse I've ever been to, but it was certainly a unique restaurant experience.

Porcao Rio, http://www.porcao.com.br.

I was ready to retire from eating beef at the end of the meal -- not because I'd had enough beef for a lifetime -- but because it was clear it wouldn't get better than this and I wanted to go out on top!

Parilla 1880 in San Telmo.
La Cabarazilla (sp?) in Recolleta on crossing of Junin & ??

El Globo on Av. Mayo and Av. 9 Julio.

La Bisteca in Puerto Madero

El Estabalo (sp?) in Centro or is it microcentro.

I totally second El Establo. The best steak I had on my recent trip to Argentina. However, the benchmark for me is and will remain The Hitching Post, in Casmalia. NOT the one in Solvang from the movie Sideways (which is fine, but nothing close to the original in Casmalia). It's very out of the way, and looks like a total dive from the outside, but truly the most incredible tasting steaks I have ever had.

There's one of these in NYC, went there for the first time a few weeks ago. I never even got up to check out the salad bar, I ate nothing but beef the entire time. Not sure if its as good as the one in Rio, but it was tasty nonetheless.

I have to add Charlie Palmer Steak at the Four Seasons in Vegas to my list of favourites -- we shared a surf and turf and a NY strip and it was simply awesome.

I thought that Bull & Bear in NYC was decent as was Mastro's in Beverly Hills.

I just found this thread for the first time and I had to post... The wife and I are self-proclaimed steak connisieurs (sic) and make it a point to try as many great steakhouses as we can across the country... The filet at Charlie Palmers in Vegas was, well, words just cant describe how divine it was... We both insist that we will never eat a finer piece of meat for the rest of our lives!

jaykay6 Feb 13, 2009 1:16 am

Mastro's, Bern's. Gibson's, and Peter Luger are all wonderful places with great food and there own unique atmospheres however the best steak I have ever had is at CUT not the most traditional steakhouse but IMHO the best Steakhouse in the US.

uclabruin82 Feb 16, 2009 3:02 pm

jaykay6, I hope you ordered the bone marrow to go on top of your steak. I mean, what else does steak really need besides a topping of fried beef fat in garlic? Simply amazing. I have many friends who prefer Mastros because of the more traditionial steakhouse feel, but if you can get over the decor, and annoying B-list celeb sighting, CUT really is one of the best steakhouses in the country.

jaykay6 Feb 16, 2009 8:14 pm

Well I have only been to CUT in Beverly Hills twice and the first time I did have the bone marrow on my steak, I agree the decor is a bit boring, and speaking of B List celebrities the guy from ZZ Top walked in not sure which one and they played Cheap Sunglasses as they walked him to his table, it was priceless.

uclabruin82, have you been to CUT in Vegas at the Palazzo, I find the decor to be much better, and the manager there is great and very accommodating, I like eating at CUT in Vegas much better.

BlueT Feb 18, 2009 4:01 am

I like the outback steakhouse in singapore. They have a great main course, and also some delicious dessert as well. And the people are so friendly and helpful, and the price is reasonable.

Just ate here last week. Amazing beef. Similar to all of these "Brazilian Steak House" type restaurants though, you have to know what you are doing to get that "second to none" steak. It takes quite a bit of discipline to pass up the salad bar and the very tasty "lesser" meats to hang in there for the prime cuts. The prime cuts I had at Porcao last week really were phenomenal. If you are up for this type of dining experience, this is your place. If you want "fine" dining service while you enjoy your steak, look elsewhere. I also did not look at the wine list and just drank the "chopp" that came with my meal.

As a side note, the lamb was very "gamey" which is great if you like your lamb verging on mutton flavour. The beef was excellent. Hang in there for the great cuts.

A mediocre steak cooked over wood or charcoal will beat the best steak in the world cooked however they do it at Mortons and other famous American steakhouses. Every time.:)

as a former texas resident, and bi-daily-operator of charcoal grill and weekend SMOKER... ie oldschool HARDLINER....

id have to say the best restaurant steak in the US i had was cooked on a salamander broiler (ruth's chris houston). and better than those i grill at home

of course, the above doesnt hold a candle to a slice of picanha at Porcau Rios or a hunk of Argentine steak.... but just to say electric/gas steakhouse steaks arent bad. (if you cook steaks at home in an electric broiler... thats another matter!)

So, if one is in Argentina and wants a steak, one goes to a pasta house?

No. Actually, there are no steakhouses in Buenos Aires.

In reality, the only real steakhouse we do have in EZE is the infamous tourist trap... Cabania Las Lilas.... a mediocre option for dead cow in EZE. The concept of a steakhouse is completely foreign in Argentina.... locals expect to eat good meat everywhere, even in an inexpensive cafe on a street corner.

Having said all this... Argentine families have the best meat at home, when you grill yourself... :D ^

I think the only thing you have to remember to get outstanding steak in EZE is the word "jugoso" ;)

um, no, while there a few "boutique" ranchers just like in any industry in any location there is no cachet.

a steakhouse in houston like perrys or vics or brenners would not advertise "local beef". nor would one go in a steakhouse in california and ask for "texas beef".

while we obviously have a large cattle industry the availability of "good beef" for a consumer is not unique to texas.

in fact one could say the state food is beef brisket which is smoked for 10+ hours (w/ hickory or pecan) to improve the taste on what typically is a bland and tough piece of meat.

churrasco is certainty a great way of preparing meats, the most popular in brazil. in my 2 months in rio (separate trips) i ate at rodizios 3 to 5 times a week. having tried many, porcao is tops, and picanha is their king cut. if you cant appreciate that, its YOUR loss

I also have eaten at rodizios and churrascarias dozens of times in Brazil. Maybe close to 100 times by now. You are definitely right that picanha is king there, and it's plenty good..., but my favorite cut is fraldinha. I've never had tastier beef than in Brazil, though I've never eaten in Argentina yet.

BTW, I don't know if it's connected to the one in Rio, but I have dined twice at Porcao in Recife, and it was the best of the best. Also the priciest by far. Tabue de Carne in Natal is excellent as well at about 1/3 the price.

I had a pretty good lomo de chorizo at an Argentine "steakhouse" (if I'm allowed to use that word ;)), called Gauchos, in Amsterdam, the other evening. Really tasty provoleta (at least their version of it) and panqueque de dulce de leche! They claim they have the only beef in Amsterdam that is from Argentina.

The Palm in Chicago

I had a really nice meal the weekend before last (5/3) at The Palm in Chicago. I felt like a good steak (I was solo dining in Chicago) so I did a little research online about any steakhouses that were doing any web "specials", as I know most chains have one going on (Morton's, Ruth's Chris & Flemings all have something I was aware of).

Sure enough I found The Palm website and they have a current "Biggest and Best Filet" meal deal going on for $39.00/person. It includes soup or salad first course choices, a choice of two different filet or a fish main course, and a side dish. I liked the fact that it did not included dessert, as I'm not big on desserts and wanted to avoid one anyway.

There is an online coupon to print out, but it is not needed at the restaurant; just ask about the special and they'll give it to you (as is the case with most of these specials: they aren't on the menu, but mention them and they're yours).

What was nice was that I found out that there is an additional option not mentioned on the website: for and additional $10 you can have the 12 oz. New York Strip instead of the filet.

I went for the Caesar Salad (very good!), New York Strip (M/R) with a side of peppercorn sauce (included), and a side of green beans (sauteed w/garlic). I also added an iced tea. Overall, everything was excellent! Good service as well.

With the menu price of the 12 oz. New York at over $40, I thought it was a pretty good deal. My total bill (with a 20%+ tip) was just under $70/AI.

Old Swan Brewery, Perth, Western Australia

Converted from a brewery to an apartment complex with a couple of restaurants, I reckon this place serves the best steaks in Australia.

I am not sure if it counts as a "steakhouse" but the food...^

The complex is on the banks of the Swan River, and there are 2 restaurants - go for the bar and grill, although Zafarelli's (?) has a very good reputation as a fine dining establishment.

If you are in a party of 2 or more, be sure to go for "The Tomahawk" - this is the biggest ribeye I have seen, priced by 100gm, and carved off the bone at the table.

BTW, I have no involvement in the place, other than being fed well every time I go there!!

It's got to be without a shadow of a doubt BOBBY VAN'S STEAKHOUSE in Washington, I went there when I last visited in November and their sirloin steak is fantastic, my mouth is watering just thinking about it...
