Also, a great deal of the Wagyu found here comes from Harrell Ranch, here in Austin, a small, family-run ranch that does an amazing job. We have met the husband and wife (she is Japanese). They have an interesting tale to tell on how they managed to get Kobe cattle from Japan to the US! It's illegal to export the animals out of Japan.
The Harrells have a shop here in town where their beef is cut as it's bought. It's possible to buy 1/2 or 1/4 of a cow there, as well as large combination packs at significant savings. The store is called, appropriately, The Meat Shop. It's one of our hidden gems here. It's also possible to buy online at their web site. We buy their beef nearly exclusively these days and are satisfied that it's some of the best beef available in the US. There's a fantastic article here that tells more about the ranch. A few years ago a highway was constructed through the Harrell's property, and I think they were imminent domained out. :( The link above seems to go to another Harrell Ranch web site now. Not sure if it is the same folks or different folks. The ranch linked is in Oklahoma and raises longhorn cattle. There is another Wagyu source that we have found. They mention that they specialize in a particular breed of Wagyu called Akaushi: http://www.heartbrandbeef.com/ Their ranch is also here in Texas. It's possible to order cuts online, and they're available in some retail stores, as well as some restaurants. Not sure if they'll sell in bulk (i.e. 1/2 or 1/4 a cow). I haven't tried them yet, but my husband and I intend to procure some soon to see how it compares to our long-lost favorite, Harrell's. We were at the Inn at Dos Brisas for brunch this past weekend, and it was reading their menu that turned us on to the Akaushi at Heartbrand. They didn't serve any of it as part of their brunch menu that day, however. Completely unrelated... I read an article about a particularly "unique" steakhouse located inside The Penthouse Club in NYC. The article mentioned that the chef was given a virtual blank check and free rein when he signed on there. As a result, he has an amazing dry aging room and ages his steaks much longer than most. The article mentioned that his restaurant happened to be among the best in the city for steaks. Incidentally and probably not surprisingly, the steaks were also among the priciest. We both really got a kick out of the story. I'd link to it, but I'm at work now and probably shouldn't hunt for it until this evening when I'm on my personal computer. ;) I've always been a little curious what goes on in these types of venues (gentleman's clubs, not steakhouses), so who knows? Maybe the next time I'm in the city I can satisfy both curiosities at once! lol! |
MK Chicago
MK is one of my favorites.....

i like the steak in the steakhouse at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. I also like the steak in Chicago at the restaurant steakhouse in the Doubletree Hotel sorry can't think of the name of it / it is a steakhouse chain , not a hotel restaurant. Lugers in NY. I have had Kobe beef in Japan , was good , but expensive. Morton's is a pretty good pick too.

Had a really nice 14oz NY at CUT in the Palazzo Las Vegas -- truly enjoyed the meal and service there. It is a close call between CUT and Charlie Palmer Steak for me in LAS.

I thought you once recommended this place. When I ate there in 2005, I thoroughly enjoyed it, as well as the other places where I ate steak in Argentina and Uruguay.
FWIW, I believe La Mosca used to be the place to go for steaks in Bs As 20 years ago. |

So where does one go for good steak in Bs As? I wasn't going to go back to Las Lilas as I had a mediocre experience after a pretty good meal the night before. Inconsistency is probably Las Lilas's failing (from that sample of 2). No atypical of restaurants that have strayed from their roots.

Best Steakhouses
I do not remember the names of the two places I ate in Buenos Aries within the past few years, but one of the best NY strip steaks I even had was from a place in Kansas City, Missouri called the "Golden Ox". I recall the location of the restaurant was very close to the KC stockyards. Another place for great beef is Gene & Georgetti's in Chicago.

Samsclub, $7.99 / lbs. One of the best meats I've ever had.

My top three:
1. Metropolitan Grill in Seattle, WA 2. Mitchell's Steakhouse in downtown Columbus, OH 3. The Capital Grill in Boston, MA Despite growing up in Illinois, I've never been to a steakhouse in Chicago. I'll have to remedy that soon with some of the suggestions from this thread. I recently visited both Sparks and Luger's in New York and came away disappointed. The service and ambiance at Sparks was top notch, but I found the food to be average. At Luger's, the steak was pretty good, but everything else was subpar. Maybe I'm just unlucky. |

I find DelFrisco's to be hit or miss, ive had some of the best steak Ive ever eaten there as well as some very average. Sparks OTOH has never disappointed me.
Lugers is a great steakhouse but only accepting cash just rubs me the wrong way. I agree with some of the others about Shulas being absolutely top notch. I also really like Charlies in Orlando. |
Seems that Flemings is now serving asmaller cut of a lower quality meat. Is this a general trend?
|
Hawksmoor in London. Really excellent meat with great provence (the best butchers in town, the Ginger Pig) and superb cocktails too.
|
i see some talk of kobe/wagyu here and thought I'd mention another great source:
http://www.yama-beef.com/home.htm This is also in Texas. They have an impressive operation. |

When my Dad is in town we go to Mastro's in Scottsdale. I know they're in California too but I can't speak to those places. I do know that the Scottsdale one does great meat, onion rings, appitizers and the bar mixes a good drink.

Cattlemans restaurant in Fort Worth, particularly the Rose of Texas filet steak which was the best I' ve had outside Argentina. There they're nearly all perfect. Years ago we realised that American steak was so much better than that available in UK and went on holiday to Texas to eat steak. While there we were told that Texans went to Argebntina when they wanted to eat decent meat so we went there. It's true.

Ruth Chris in New Orleans, the one across from the Hilton Riverside. For some reason, that Ruth Chris location is way better than any of the other ones I have been to.
Also, go on a Wednesday night and you can see some of the Saints players. |

Capital Grille and Grill 23 in Boston are my favorites. I've had hit or miss experiences at Morton's.

You are misteaken, the original Ruth's Chris Steak House was located at 711 North Broad Street in New Orleans.

I love Mastro's in Beverly Hills. Just got back from Cut a few minutes ago, and man, was that American Wagyu awesome! My fiancee got the New York Sirloin Dry aged for 35 days and it didn't seem as good as the steaks we get from Mastro's, but I tried the American Wagyu Rib Eye and it was easily the best steak I've ever had.
|
When it comes to American Beef I like (in the right order)
1) Mastros, B.H. 2) Wolfgang's B.H. 3) Boa's, W.H. 4) Wolfgang's Tribeca 5) Peter Luger's, Brooklyn 6) Fette Sau, Brooklyn In BsAs I highly recommend the old Mirasol next to the Sheraton. Unbelievable taste, Las Lillas is more touristy. If in Cologne, Germany do not miss out on europe's oldest argentinian steak house: El Gaucho. www.el-gaucho.de Authentic and just great. For germany they started the trend. |
My 3 favorites:
1) Barclay Prime in Philadelphia 2) McKendrick's in Dunwoody 2) Bern's in Tampa |
I'll second the vote for Bern's in Tampa.
Also Manny's in Minneapolis is one of my all time favorites. |
I eat at Ruth's Chris a lot anywhere I am but, believe it or not, the Ruth's Chris at the Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre, PA is the best Ruth's Chris I've eaten at. Everything from the food to the service is above par.
Bobette |
El Gaucho's in Aruba for Argentine beef is excellent.
|
My favourites are:
* Bern's (Tampa) - not just for the steaks, but for the wine selection and the dessert room * Craftsteak - I prefer the Las Vegas location, but the Manhattan one is almost as good * Sparks - people are dying to eat there! :p Great atmosphere, great service, can get a little loud sometimes Wolfgangs Tribeca is a strong contender, too. I have never been to Peter Luger's, though, so it could bump Sparks off the Top 3 list if it lives up to its billing. |
No question, in my mind, which is the best.
I have been to:
Morton's all over Ruth's Chris all over DelFrisco's in Vegas and Houston Peter Luger's in NYC Wolfgangs in NYC Harris' in SF House of Prime Rib in SF Bobbo's in SF Barclay Prime in Philly Mastro's Beverly Hills Pappa John's in Houston Smith & Wollensky many locations Capitol Grille in Boston and DC The Prime Rib in Baltimore Bone's in Atlanta (Geez, I've eaten a lot of red meat in my life...) These are the restaurants that I can remember off the top of my head. And out of all these, there is only one restaurant that hands down wins for me: Mastro's City Hall Steakhouse in Scottsdale, AZ. This, in my opinion, is better than the one in Beverly hills. The steaks are always just done perfectly, with the right amount of salt, perfect tempreature, and perfect texture. These are the best steaks I've ever eaten. For me, the runner up is DelFrisco's. They have fabulous steaks also and are a close 2nd. But Mastro's City Hall (not the other Mastro's in Scottsdale) is just awesome. |
Craftsteak is closed in NYC now :td:
We went to Mastro's last year in Scottsdale and it was excellent. Wolfgang's is probably the best in NYC now. |
