Some number of years ago, I joined the Benihana “friends with benefits” program. We don’t have one in Kansas, but they do have a Kona Grill and then a sushi place in Leawood. On your birthday, they send out a $50 gift cert which works across the chain. I then stacked this with the $100 Resy credit from Amex Plat (plus I made a reservation through OpenTable to earn 1,100 points). For our two beers, appetizer, and entrees, plus tip/tax, it was $163~. I also dipped into the Amex Gold Resy benefit to cover the last bit, so a “free” dinner. Definitely a bit pricey, though you can’t complain about the card benefits. We’ve also got a ton of leftovers. Not pictured is a salad with macadamia crusted chicken.

Pork tonkatsu from this NYT Dining recipe -- https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/...ance_reranking -- it's an old favorite of mine and had some nice kick with the fresh jalapeno I topped the cutlets with.
Paired with some fresh salad and leftover salad from dinner last night at Kona Grill. |
Leftover birthday cake from Wednesday to finish off a long leisurely dinner with one of my besties while catching up on Olympic Hockey- miniature crab cakes, bacon wrapped scallops, Chilean sea bass and Bollinger (my friends dog was treated to two large scallops and three slices of leftover Prime Tenderloin)

Yesterday, my parents invited me to their Valentine’s Day date on not-Valentine’s Day at 2:30 PM to “beat the rush” and so that I could drive them (despite my mother claiming my car is too short and that I drive too quickly). We went to Jack Allen’s on Anderson Lane, and I tried something new there as I’m never fully satisfied by the Mac and cheese with spiced chicken. My “crispy salmon” was tasty, and the tomatillo salsa it came with was yummy. We also had the queso with green chili pork, and the included salsa was also quite yummy with a nice charred flavor (despite my father saying it was too spicy). We ended off with two “chocolate bombs” - the Valentine’s special was that these were made with red velvet instead of chocolate cake on the base (most of it is some sort of yummy mousse). Mother got her own, and Father and I shared one. Luckily, they only kissed once, and I made my “ewwww” well known. I think I’ll have pizza today. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...29a5220d5.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cb5f7a95a.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6837e5060.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...49fddc42f.jpeg |
That's a good looking meal, EE. Nice of you to chaperone your parents on their date so they wouldn't misbehave.

Okay, I was going to eat pizza, but this establishment across from my hotel caught my eye, and I had to try it based on the consistent Google reviews. Ladybird Taco in Nashville - I can’t escape Austin - eeeek! The queso was good, and so was my bacon, egg, and cheese taco - the tortillas were really good and soft. I also enjoyed the recommended jalapeño and garlic salsa. Maybe, I’ll have pizza today.

Day late Valentine’s dinner at Mamani in Dallas. Got a star only having opened in September and I can say it’s well deserved. Pictured are the scallops and caviar that my wife had (she shared, it was exquisite), gnocchi with black truffle, Dover sole with Meyer lemon and brown butter (for 2). Not pictured are the foie gras I had to start and Paris-Brest dessert.
Had an ok Sauternes with the foie (the Yquem was over budget and overpriced) and Domaine Michel Niellon, Les Champgains 1er Cru 2021 with dinner. Great way to close out the weekend. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cd7cf9118.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...77bc65070.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...7e7b6ce01.jpeg |
