FWIW, Channel Islands cows seem to have breaks when they don't lactate unlike some other breeds (probably Holsteins) that may lactate from maturity until the day they're sent off to the hamburger factory*. Still have to be fed but may only be non-productive for maybe 10-20% of their mature lives?

* - nice thing about labelling laws in France. The type of cow has to be identified on packaging, even in supermarkets. Was in either a Lidl or Aldi and noticed the beef packaging was labelled "laitieres" which I would assume meant the beef was from clapped-out milking cows. On the flip side, saw a chalk board at some butcher where there seemed to be a full biography (and all the identity) of the cow being served that day.
