So literally, there is no other way to get an in n out burger with other ingredients on it? Only real options are lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese?

Unlike many/most burger chains, In 'N' Out's menu is utterly simple and has changed very little since it's founding: hamburgers/cheeseburgers (+veggies for topping), fries, shakes/sodas.

Whatever is ordered from the regular or "secret" menu is simply variants on this simple theme.

See above

Part of In 'N' Out's success is attributable to its single-minded focus on simplicity (that's hardly the only reason, but it's an important one).

Got it, I appreciate what they are doing, for some reason I had in mind a few more options. They better be good!

You can have the onion grilled.

I'm not trying to dissuade you, they make very good basic burgers made out of fresh ingredients; however, in my opinion, In-N-Out offers nothing that justifies my going out the way for.

And some of us arrange our flight connections so as to be able to go to In N Out on a layover whenever possible, and count the days until the next one

After you've been there, let us know which camp you find yourself in

Question is, what do we order? First timers, so we'd like to know what are the must haves. We know about the secret menu, but have no idea what is actually on it. We know we must try animal style burgers too. I'll probably have one normal and one animal style. Is this a good way to go? Is there anything else we need to order on the burger? Thanks for your help!
Double double, fries, large chocolate shake.

Be careful ordering two burgers; they're pretty big.

Here's the secret menu.

Yes there is. I tried animal style one time and it didn't work for me at all. The onions being the problem.

My standard is a double meat (no cheese), with everything + double pickles, and extra spread. I rarely ever order fries there because I just don't like skinny fries, but if I do, I order well done.

Not quite. The "Not-So-Secret Menu" on In-N-Out's own site is a bit limited. The Hack The Menu link posted further down the thread does a better job of showing things, but my favorite is this one:

https://daviswiki.org/in-n-out_secret_menu

That said, it's not inaccurate to say that the secret menu doesn't add [m]any more ingredients; it just allows you to use the same ingredients in a different way to create some different flavor combinations. Sorry, no beetroot.

But as much as I love In-N-Out, there's some truth to TWA884's statement that it's simply "very good basic burgers out of fresh ingredients"--but that's very much part of the appeal of the product. They may be stuck in the '50s, but that's actually not altogether a bad thing. Other than the American cheese, I don't think there's many artificial/processed ingredients in the In-N-Out kitchen.

To each his/her own taste, but I love onions and hate pickles, so I'd despise your burger. Up to the OP to decide what he likes, but FWIW, here's my standard order at In-N-Out:

Double Meat (no cheese)
Medium-rare
Extra toasted bun
Animal-style
No pickle
Extra whole grilled onion (plus the chopped grilled onions that come with animal style, but no raw onion)
No salt

Like braslvr, I'm actually not a fan of thin-cut fries and find theirs a bit uninspired (that's what you get when you slice a potato and toss it in a fryer and add nothing else, I guess), but if I do, I get them extra-well done and with no salt, and then I squeeze a bit of lemon from the lemon wedges at the drink station over them. The lemon actually makes a big difference.

I'm normally not a fan of pickles, but have been growing into them lately. Pickles aren't big in Australia...

No Beetroot?!?! Hahaha... man you guys don't know what you're missing out on.

I think I'll order the Double double, animal style. See how I go. I'll also be visiting as many burger joints in NYC while I'm there. Going to be 10kg heavier on return home...

Just to be clear, I love some raw onion on my burgers. I just don't like caramelized onions, which come on the animal style burgers. And yeah, pickles are by far the most important topping to me. Oddly, In-N-Out does not put any pickles on their (non animal style) burgers unless you ask for them. FWIW, my wife loves caramelized onions and hates pickles.

In n Out is OK, I wouldn't plan a stopover for it though. It seems to have a bit of a cult following in Australia, especially with hipsters. It just tastes like an average pub burger, IMO.

Probably because burgers in Australia suck... We've had a bit of a surge in American style places opening up, but so many 'gourmet' burger places that charge $12+ for a burger with no flavour.
