You must be kidding! I live within a mile of two different Five Guys free-standing stores in Washington, DC (one on Connecticut Avenue & the other on H Street NW). There is also one in Reagan National Airport (airside in Terminal C - US Airways). I've tried to like them, but the fries are nothing short of liquid grease with slivers of potatoes thrown in for decoration. Yecch... The burgers are also greasy and nothing special. Neither the Five Guys burgers nor their fries hold a candle to In-N-Out Burger, unless you are a grease gourmet.
I think this is really a case of people saying their fries are great because others tell them they should like them.

And while you are eating it make sure to admire the sleeping giant behind you. The chickens add to the local flavor.

Neighbors have a beef with In-N-Out...
Their beef isn't with the burger.
Merchants near some Southern California In-N-Out Burger restaurants say their gripe is with growing traffic jams at drive-through lanes that are keeping customers from getting in and out of their stores.
Long lines of idling cars whose occupants are waiting for made-to-order double-doubles, fries and chocolate shakes sometimes spill into streets and block driveways and alleys, according to owners of adjacent businesses.
The traffic crunch has sent executives of the Irvine-based chain on a crash program to open new outlets to relieve pressure on existing In-N-Outs. The chain is also expanding its corps of young red-apron-clad workers with hand-held terminals outside to speed up drive-through lines.
"We try really hard to be good neighbors and not block people's driveways," said Carl Van Fleet, In-N-Out Burger's vice president of planning and development. "Long after stores were built we've gone back and spent heavily to improve our capacity and order-taking ability."

The one near me in Pasadena has started working with the handhelds--works pretty well so far. They also have signs up urging customers not to block driveways (generally they're respected).

I've tried Five Guys (one just opened in Nashville) and liked the burgers, but the fries were salty.

I was at a John Varvatos Event on Melrose last week and they had an In and Out Truck parked there dishing out free burgers all day. ^
