hilarious - even if the romantic in me wishes it wasn't quite so true . . .

There are better ice cream place in Philly, however, for $3.50 a pint + convenience, it's hard to beat HD. I just stock up another HD Strawberry & Coffee from CVS yesterday :D

HD Green Tea Ice cream is fantastic. I also enjoy Wegmans Premium Ice Cream, pistachio flavor.

When I am in Maine I like Giffords Ice Cream and a frozen custard stand off RTE 1 near Freeport/Yarmouth town line in the summer.

A previous poster mentioned Blue Bell IC from Texas which is pretty good, their peaches and cream IC in the summer is really good.

Also I am interested to try Yuengling Ice cream which was discontinued in the 80's is being brought back and made by dairy's in eastern PA. http://articles.mcall.com/2014-01-16...dick-yuengling , considering the price that it should retail for I assume it will be top quality.

I've actually found Walgreen's store brand to be pretty good, with some flavors on par with HD or B&J.

Intersting fact, Häagen-Dazs was actually founded in the US (Bronx, NY) and the name doesn't mean anything in any language. According to the founder's daughter, Doris Hurley, her father sat at the kitchen table for hours saying nonsensical words until he came up with a combination he liked. From Wikipedia

Personally, I prefer HD over any other brand. It has the perfect creamy texture and even their gelato is good too. Their caramel cone ice cream flavour is a little too sweet, but still so good. Also, their limited edition peppermint bark ice cream (white chocolate with crunchy chocolate peppermint bark and peppermint candy pieces) has the right amount of mint flavour to it and the ice cream itself isn't too sweet.

Black Cherry Amaretto Gelato

Recently I've been enjoying their Caramel Cone more than any other flavor, even my beloved Chocolate Peanut Butter

For me hands down it's HD. I don't need the additional chemicals and the unpleasant after taste from the other brands I've had.

Haagen-Dazs. You're Kidding, Right?

First things first. I love ice cream. The majority of the ice cream I eat I make myself. I have high standards so maybe I'm about to be a little too critical.

For years I've heard nothing but how good Ben and Jerry's and Haagen-Dazs ice cream is. Ben and Jerry's is fine but let's be honest, it's more about the mix-ins than the ice cream itself. Supposedly Haagen-Dazs was all about really good quality ice cream. I never tried Haagen-Dazs until tonight.

I had to grab a few things at the store tonight and decided to pick up a container of Haagen-Dazs new Ginger Molasses ice cream. After I had the first taste I immediately realized I had been fooled by good marketing and people who don't know what the hell good ice tastes like. It was not smooth and I could taste the ice crystals. I looked at the ingredient list and immediately spotted the culprit. The second ingredient listed was skim milk! Skim milk in premium ice cream? What are they thinking!?

My ice creams are made with heavy cream and half/half with the cream being the higher proportion. Skim milk is basically water and in my opinion isn't fit for cereal and definitely not ice cream.

Take my advice and save your money. There is nothing premium about Haagen-Dazs.

I really don't care about the brand.
If I'm given ice cream, I will eat it, and I will be happy. 'nuff said.

Apparently, they've always (?) used skim milk along with cream, although it's now the #1 ingredient in their regular ice creams. Makes for fewer calories and less fat, which is a big PR/marketing win. I wouldn't be surprised if they were also whipping their ice cream more to add air so the weight by volume is less (and also saving on calories/fat, along with ingredient costs).

I recently had paleo ice cream. That was... interesting.

Well, if someone is counting calories they should probably go for the Skinny Cow products. Paying $4 a pint for skim milk is unacceptable. Blue Bell and Publix brand are much better products at a much better value.
