As seen all over Chile. And, yes, that is mayonnaise. :o |

At Costco yesterday, and yes its cheap, but the old dog is getting boring. Costco needs to spruce up with more variety of toppings. How bout some tomatoes?

In order of decreasing importance:
Mustard Cheese Chili Onion I guess I've seen kids use Ketchup. <shrug> |
Perhaps it is reflective of the "me me me" nature of FT but it seems that most of the responses speak to what the individual poster likes on a hot dog.
The OP was asking what your region tends to put on a hot dog, regardless of your own preferences. Thus, I think he was refering to Chicago style, Sonoran, Currywurst, Coney Dog, etc. In Boston I cannot say there is any particular regional pattern to hot dog toppings. |
Hey, Eastbay1K, there is a hot dog in there somewhere, right? :D

Chili dog with mustard... that is an interesting idea, bearsfanord. I'm going to try that.

I'm in Denver. Our most famous hot dog cart-turned-joint, Biker Jim's, serves dogs with cream cheese and onions that are sautéed in Coke. I add a pickle spear or two. There's also all the usual goodies plus sriracha.

Has to be Cincinnati style
http://www.skylinechili.com/coneys.php Cheese Coney A specially made hot dog in a steamed bun with mustard and our secret recipe chili, topped with onions and shredded cheddar cheese. |
I always liked chili, mustard and onions until I moved to NYC and had a proper hot dog. Perfect topping: nothing.

Sorry for the silly question, but I cannot fathom how mustard possibly can complement a good slab of chili on a dog?
I can see the winning combination in most other suggestions in this thread but this seems like overkill. Even ketchup would fit the bill more with chili. |

C) Have you ever tried it? The tanginess of the mustard plays well against the salty savoriness of the chili and cheese. To me, ketchup sounds disgusting, it would add sweetness to a dish that should be savory. <shrug> |
Darn you, EastBay1K! :: shakes fist :: Just when I'd been away from Chile long enough to finally forget what a completo looks like!

I really miss Skyline. Not the chili dogs as much as the chili itself. Although the dogs were great too.
