I agree. I hate being asked to do this. I have occasionally picked up someone's tab in a grocery store where they would otherwise have to put something back because of a declined card or not enough cash (just in the 10 item line - not a full cart of groceries ). But that's much different than being asked to pay for someone else's meal just because they happen to be behind you in the drive-through.
No cheques accepted here!

Pro tip: In a touristy area, beware of getting in the Starbucks drive-through line behind a minivan with darkened windows. Watching the endless parade of drinks being handed into the van reminded me of a clown car in reverse.

Customer infront of me didn't have their loyalty card so they said they will log into their account and dig it up.
