JFK airports have in duty free for $43. SQ and JJ, among other have onboard dutyfree for $43. SIN has a promotion now that gives you a nice backpack for spending S$120 with DB selling for S$50 per litre.

DB is now in most Brazil arrival Dufry shops, prices vary but seem to be settling at US$50 per litre.

CLT and MIA are both $40 last time I saw, a few months ago.

Despite Diageo promises I have yet to see DB outside of Duty Free.

AA is $43 a liter onboard as well.

Is "Johnnie Walker Double Black" a good scotch? It sounds so gimimcky/commercial/prole like Chivas.

Is it a blend?

Maybe if you'd read the full thread you would get an answer. Lots of opinions because everyone's taste varies.

Latest edition of the Whiskycast podcast has an interview with the master blender from Johnny Walker talking about developing the DB blend. Also said it is definitely coming to retail in the US soon.

It's here! A local liquor store in upstate NY has Double Black on the shelf for $41.99, 0.750L. They said it arrived last week.

My husband loves this stuff. My brother got him 4 bottles. He's given two as gifts at dinner parties and the bottles have practically evaporated before the party is even half over. A third bottle got some heavy consumption at a dinner party at our place this weekend. We drove to Buffalo recently and had to do a Duty Free run just to get 4 more bottles. We went to the one on the US side of the Rainbow Bridge and I think they were $43 each.

I've been driving past a huge billboard for at least 6 weeks now advertising Double Black in New Jersey at the entrance to Rt. 3 soon after you exit the Lincoln Tunnel. Anyone seen it around here?

We've got it in all the shops here in St. Croix...I think it was $45 or $50 a bottle, saw it this past weekend for the first time, now going to have to go try it!

Lagavulin is another Diageo corporate product, marketed as if it is the real thing. Bowmore, the first legal distillery on Islay, has some quite excellent ones. Caol Ila does also, but both of those have a less phenolic taste than does Lagavulin. Port Ellen is one of my personal favorites. Although the distillery shut down in 1983 some of the old casks are still being bottled and sold. They vary widely by bottling, but I have never met one that I did not love.

I am a fan of Double Black, because at US$40 per litre it makes an affordable everyday "Islay" even though it too is just another Diageo, thus has much in common with Lagavulin.

I do miss the pre-Diageo Lagavulin and Laphroaig, which after all had much common lineage including being in adjoining towns. They still win competitions but they've lost a great deal of character IMO.

Maybe I just prefer non-multinational products when I am paying a premium price. Pretentious, moi?

I think describing 'Lagavulin' and 'Laphroaig' as being from adjoining towns is really stretching the definition of towns :D This is a small island with associated population levels. I think settlement or houses best describes the few houses you find around each distillery. I struggle even to think of the largest settlement on the island, Bowmore, as a town.

Try Ardbeg if you are looking for something non-corporate? We got a great, very personal tour of Ardbeg on the second Island Do, for the very early arrivals.

Double Black finally in the UK

saw it in LHR DF yesterday, apparently they've had it for about a month so obviously sorted the tiff with diageo.

iirc it was £27 for a litre, which is pretty good - will probably pick a bottle up next week to try.

Being advertised in the Toronto market with billboards just in time for Christmas. The price is $69.95! This compares with $99 for two at the YYZ Duty Free.

I restocked last weekend. $43/L from CO onboard duty free and $48/L at GIG duty free.

Finally caved and grabbed a bottle at LHR for about USD 45

One of the specialty grocery stores in Detroit has it. I really need to pick a bottle up... I've HAD it before, so no rush this time.

$38 here in SIN. About to leave the SKL and go grab a bottle.

WCT3U Nov 26, 2011 5:52 pm

The JW Black comes in (at least) 0.75L, 1.14L and 1.75L bottles. Is Double Black available in something larger than the 0.75L bottle?
