CLT now has DB for $40 per litre. They are often out, so last week I ordered the bottles in advance. It worked, but not smoothly. The store manager, Beanca Armstrong advised me to call her at 704 359 5577 or email her at [email protected] to place an advance order. I will do that for future needs.

Is "Johnnie Walker Double Black" a good scotch? It sounds so gimimcky/commercial/prole like Chivas.
Is it a blend? |
This thread makes me a bit sad. I was on an AA flight from LHR to JFK last month and had decided to get a bottle to try. I was quite looking forward to it. I had actually never bought anything from duty free on the plane before either.
And I dozed off and missed the duty free and didnt think of it until on final approach to JFK :( I tried a rather large liquor store near us last night but it hasn't made it there in the retail supply yet. I had to settle for a bottle of Caol Ila Distillers Reserve and muddle through till I am back to the UK in August. ;) |

I tasted this a couple of weeks ago in SYD. It was good, but overpriced.
A$66 is about USD$59, and for a few bucks more, I'd buy the real thing Lagavulin, or it's less expensive cousin, other Islay single malts. No way will I spend A$66 on JW. FYI, I thought SYD duty free was very expensive vs other airports. I am a fan of Double Black, because at US$40 per litre it makes an affordable everyday "Islay" even though it too is just another Diageo, thus has much in common with Lagavulin. I do miss the pre-Diageo Lagavulin and Laphroaig, which after all had much common lineage including being in adjoining towns. They still win competitions but they've lost a great deal of character IMO. Maybe I just prefer non-multinational products when I am paying a premium price. Pretentious, moi? |
USD $76 for 2 at SXM

Last Thursday coming back from LHR I managed to stay awake and get a bottle. Also told the FA to wake me for duty free as insurance. It was $43 a liter onboard AA. I think it is a pretty good deal for that price. It isn't a good Ardbeg for instance, but a good Ardbeg is several times as expensive. For the price I was quite pleased. I have several more international trips this year, I may do some Christmas shopping. ;)

MIA had two for $80 yesterday.
|
It's also in BKK and available onboard CO/UA. US$43 either way.

Seeing this thread made me remember that I'm running low on double black. Are there any places to restock in the US without paying a ton of $?

I bought for my uncle in Korea and he preferred the regular black.

DB is now in most Brazil arrival Dufry shops, prices vary but seem to be settling at US$50 per litre. CLT and MIA are both $40 last time I saw, a few months ago. Despite Diageo promises I have yet to see DB outside of Duty Free. |
