beckoa, bring some more Riojas in case this KS Merlot ends up being worthy of the sink...
The last 'tasting' put a number on my supply... in order to replenish it, I need donations of airline miles to revisit MAD and stock up again (Down to less then 24 bottles )

But this sounds like a nice opportunity... to the Consolidated ANC meet-up thread then?

Since you are in there almost everyday, check their stock and see if they even have any left. Let us know.

BBQ & red wine.....sounds like summer to me

Lots of discussion over the years on the Parker boards about this very topic. I stopped reading that magazine a long time ago. I do somewhat trust Cellartracker notes. It's the Zagat of the wine world.

I've heard that the Kirkland Merlot is made from a blend of a $30 and $50 Eastern Washington Merlot (the actual producer is escaping me right now) that get rave reviews so anything is possible, I guess.

#13 of the top 100

89 Points
Kirkland Signature 2006 Merlot
(Columbia Valley); $9. This is the Costco
house brand, and the new Merlot comes through
with exceptional flavors for the price. Its lush and
loaded with black cherry and mocha flavors.
Tannins are ripe and smooth, the concentration is
surprising, and there are no holes in this wine; it
plays out smoothly with a very satisfying richness.

From Costco!!!! They are kidding, right? Has anyone tried this wine?
I am not sure why you're so indignant -- the publication is not proclaiming the best wines, but rather the best buy wines. The article does not say that the wine is exceptional, but rather exceptional for the price.

I haven't tried this wine, and I doubt that it would be to my liking, but is it so outrageous for someone to opine that it's pretty good for $9 a bottle?

Cellartracker is probably your best bet.

Checked both Costcos in Anchorage--no KS '06 Merlot anywhere.

A source can check to see if any is on order if anyone can get the product number and post it here, though!
