My Latest Upgrade Strategy

So, I am sitting on an ORD-SLC flight right now, seat 2A I might add, feeling rather proud of myself for this upgrade strategy.....
I have been so peeved at a decreasing upgrade ratio that I have started booking everything in M. I then call SMS and have them upgrade me using miles or PMU's. On arrival to the airport I am batting about 500 in terms of actually having to give up the miles or PMU. (Note: this screws up any possibility of OLCI)

I thought that you were off the upgrade list if you're listed as upgrading using PMUs or miles.

I think Bonzz means that only 50% of the time do they collect the upgrade currency.

For a domestic flight, you should be able to book K, no?

Interesting. I suppose one will judge this strategy based on the value (if any) they put on SMs (or to a lesser extent on PMUs). I already buy into K or higher almost every time I fly. So, how many SMs is it worth to me to guarantee an upg on a route like ORD-SLC? I dunno. Maybe 100? Even with the 50/50 chance of no collection, I'd be inclined to roll the dice on the shorthaul (especially as a PM on a relatively high fare) and save my miles for BE TATLs/TPACs.

K for Hawaii; M for anywhere else domestic. (K is also the minimum class for a companion upgrade.)

Sorry,

It's K anywhere domestic or within North/Central America:

If you are confirmed yes, if you are waitlisted you can be on both

Ah, if you're a PM. Which I see the OP is. But a non-PM cannot use miles to upgrade a K class AFAIK. I'd be happy to be wrong on that....

AFAIK, this is one thing status has nothing to do with.

I don't see on the link an option to upgrade using miles. How many miles does it take to upgrade a K and higher fare domestically?

I was told I had to buy M JFK-LAS in January to UG with miles. And I had researched on FT and found the same info..... Maybe K applies for a PMU but I don't think so for miles UGs.

Yes, K+ for PMU. M+ for miles.

Sorry for the confusion. The OP had mentioned PMU's.

When they do collect the PMU or miles, you lose any chance of earning miles or MQMs on the flight though, right?

No, you get the miles and MQMs (which on an M+ fare will include a 50% bonus). You bought the ticket with cash, and are only using the PMU or miles to change to a better seat.
