Help!
I'm going on what should be my last trip of the year next week. It will leave me 21 miles short of Gold (49,979 miles)
What should I do?

Its up to you, but I have known DL not to grant the status. Its the "close but no cigar" response. Maybe this year is different.

2) Take a cheap RT between now and year-end. 100% mileage bonus alone should make it worthwhile.
3) Allow yourself to fall short and pray for the mercy of the Skymiles powers. In 2000, I fell ~200 miles short of GM. I wrote convincing letters and followed up with phone calls, asking to be bumped up to GM. I pointed out my very heavy activity in the second half of the year. It took quite an effort, but I was finally bumped up to GM. I rewarded DL and quickly earned PM anyway. The effort required was a bit cumbersome. I would suggest that you save yourself the hassle and earn the status, even though it is frustrating to be 21 miles short.

This should not be a multiple choice question!!!! With all of the DL webpage/ e-mail fare specials available.....GO SOMEWHERE AND HAVE LUNCH ONE DAY AND GET THIS OVER WITH.It will cost you more in time and inconvenience to gravel with DL to get bumped up than it will to take a short/cheap airplane ride.

I had the same problem last year. I was less than 100 miles short of GM because DL kept cancelling flights I had scheduled in December. I didn't make it. Given the circumstances, I asked that my GM status be extended, but I never got a response. Fortunately, DL ran one of those GM promotions i.e. so many segments/miles by 3/31 and I requalified. There are a ton of cheap flights out there--just grab one.

Gui,
We're talking BASE miles here. Miles from activities like Delta dining don't count toward status. The only exception is the AMEX Platinum Optima card, which does generate status miles, but it's probably too late to get them for 2001. A quick flight is the answer, or begging Delta for an exception to the rules. If you choose a flight, you might want to go over New Year's, so that the return flight counts toward status in 2002.

I would call SMS now and see if they will grant you GM status. Try and get a supervisor when you call, for some reason, they seem to make things happen faster. Make sure that you keep a record of the names and city locations of the agents that you speak to.
How up to date are you on your Skymiles balance. If you had any trips that qualified for the double miles promo, make sure that they are all listed.
If they turn you down, you still have time for a quick mileage run. Don't forget if you register and fly before 12/15, you will receive double elite miles.

I have the same problem this year and after a call to Delta CS, I decided to find the cheapest fare available and get on the plane with a book. They did not present a comforting scenario for receiving the comp.
Fortunately, the South East fare sale makes it a cheap, though time consuming feat.
Good Luck.

Well, Delta would do nothing for me (she wasn't even nice about it). I'm going to find the cheapest fare out of Atlanta and do a day trip somewhere.
Thanks for your help.
