Delta named airline of the year!

Here's their press release:
DELTA NAMED 1998 AIRLINE OF THE YEAR

27 Jan 1999

Premier Industry Publication Awards Delta Top Honors

WASHINGTON, DC, January 27, 1999 -- Air Transport World magazine – the
premier monthly publication covering the world airline industry – today named
Delta Air Lines the Airline of the Year for 1998. The publication honored
Delta for the airline’s growing success in customer service, financial
soundness, product and marketing innovation, and employee morale.

Delta President and CEO Leo F. Mullin commented, “This prestigious award
is a testament both to the remarkable dedication of Delta employees to serving
our customers and to our hard work during the past year. The fact that the
editorial staff of Air Transport World – the people who scrutinize all the
world’s airlines every day – chose to single out Delta is a real honor.

“The people of Delta didn’t set out to win this accolade – rather, we
work to make our airline better every day. At the same time, becoming Airline
of the Year is important recognition for our company. It affirms the progress
the 74,000-plus Delta team is making toward our goal of being the best airline
in the world. In the future, we will know we have reached that goal when
customers consistently say, ‘Wherever Delta flies, I want to fly on Delta.’”

ATW, which features Delta as the cover story on its February issue,
describes the Airline of the Year award recipient as “a major or large
international airline which over the years has exhibited outstanding
performance in a number of airline disciplines. For an airline to win this
award it should have provided exemplary service to the public while compiling
a model safety record, been innovative in developing new markets and services,
been a leader in applying new technology to the airline industry, and
consistently been profitable.” Delta last received this honor 21 years ago,
for 1977.

Delta achieved several key milestones in 1998, including:
boarding an industry-record 105 million passengers during the year
making significant improvement in US Department of Transportation
rankings for on-time performance and baggage handling, placing Delta
in the top tier of major US carriers [45,000 fewer Delta flights were
delayed in 1998 compared to 1997]
earning a record calendar year net income of $1.1 billion
developing a new intercontinental premium-class product called
BusinessElite
approaching completion of a wide-scale aircraft and airport
refurbishment
providing significant pay increases for Delta employees, reflecting
their industry-leading performance
continuing the successful growth both of its Florida leisure-travel
product Delta Express and of Delta’s global route system
establishing a new senior management team to lead the company’s
continued progress

Mullin continued, “Delta employees worldwide are proud of our progress
last year, and there is a strong sense that we’ve established a great
foundation for further success. In 1999, Delta people will continue to be
increasingly engaged in the process of making our airline even better for our
customers, shareholders and employees.”

Delta, named Airline of the Year by Air Transport World magazine, is the
world’s most flown carrier. Delta, Delta Express, the Delta Shuttle, the
Delta Connection carriers and Delta's Worldwide Partners operate 5,211 flights
each day to 353 cities in 56 countries.
