Delta Silver Medallion Offer

I do NOT fly Delta that often, not enough for
elite status but the other day I got an offer
for complementary Silver Medallion membership
if I fly just two flights between July 15th
and September 15th.

Of course you have to call and register. The
membership is good through the end of 1999.

Has anyone else received this offer?

I will probably try for it...provided two
D-C trips coming up count as the two flights.

Any experiences with Silver Medallion anyone
can share?

And just out of catty curiousity... I'm wondering if Delta's prompted to do this by
the posts on the site, the switchovers to
Continental, etc?

I have been a Medallion or what is now Silver Medallion for several years. Some advantages of elite status are as follows.

No blackout dates

800 Mile upgrades if you travel on anything but the cheapest L class fares. These are what they sell during fare sales.

One-Way Systemwide upgrades if you travel internationally for every 20,000 miles. These are valid for M class fares are very good if you travel on Delta from Asia to the Eastcoast.

You can use miles to get Crown Room Membership for 30000 miles a year.

Some disadvantages

There are very many Silver Medallion members competing for very few domestic upgrades

Long lines at the first class/medallion check in line.

Good Luck if you try Medallion out.

Intercontinental also had an offer like this for its Six Continents Club members.

You have to fly one flight on Delta (international), and then you get your ID. I don't think domestic travel applies. 6CCs also sent out a certificate for an upgrade on certain coach and business fares, or a free companion ticket.

I got the same offer and phoned in to register. I had flown 8 DL segments this year and 12 last year, including RDU-HNL. Not sure how they picked me out. I was flying RDU-LAS and RDU-Chattanooga on DL later this month anyway, so however bad medallion is, it will be better than nothing

Catman, can you provide those of us who did not receive the offer with info? (phone number, details, etc.) This would be much appreciated.

This is such a load of garbage. I've flown 32 segments on DL so far this year (enough to reach the "coveted" Silver Medallion status), and now every Tom, Dick, and Harry can waltz right in after 2 flights? It's hard enough to secure a first class upgrade as it is, and now DL is going to open the floodgates.

No offense to those fliers who will benefit from the offer, but I think I'll take my business elsewhere.

I don't mean to go on a rant here but...

Just one more thing, I tried to call DL to complain about this promotion. Good luck getting through to the DL customer service people. (Food for thought before trying for Silver Medallion)

TweetyFlyer and anyone else interested: the
Silver Medallion offer requires two flights,
I don't think it has to be just domestic or
international. The number for customer service is: 1-800-323-2323 or I call 1-800-325-3999 (maybe that's a faster way to
get to customer service.) They can tell you
what you need to do but if you need further
info contact me directly.

On another matter: Hreamer... Yes the ff
programs are getting out of control with
everyone getting a chance at higher membership but a lot of us like myself make
miles the old fashioned way: we EARN them
(flying, offers, credit cards, etc.)

I was surprised more than anyone to get the
Silver Medallion offer and maybe I'll take a shot at trying for it. I don't fly Delta as
much... and I think that Delta's doing this
because of all the probelms with the Upgrades, Lfares, etc.

As I have written before... all the frequent
flyers can exist together if there is a little bit more services for the highest tier
members (like one checkin area for the top
tier, one for second, one for third tier) and
letting people board one tier at a time. I
almost got trambled a few times when the
nice flight attendant said "we're offering
preboarding to our frequent flyers."

I also have been hissed at by non-ff's who
complain "WHY does he get the seat and the
overhead luggage bin first?"

I'm proud to be a frequent flyer and I feel
I have earned everything I got.

I agree 100% with everyone's comments. We have earned what we have been GRANTED, but upgrading, etc. is not a GOD GIVEN RIGHT. Those FF who think so annoy me. If F class was so important they should have PAID for it. An upgrade is just that an upgrade, and unless guaranteed I don't see why anyone has the right to complain. Sure, it isn't fair, but how many times have you gotten upgraded when someone else hasn't. I think it all evens out in the end of elite FFs.

Yes Phil, upgrades are not a given right. For the majority of business trips where my
company goes for the coach ticket, I put in
for the upgrade wait and hope.

If I get it... then I say all the frequent
flyer "spirits" or planets are lined up or
I made a good impression on the counter person.

But if I don't I don't get upset I only ask the airlines for:

*An Aisle Seat
*A seat at the first row of coach. Being about 6 foot two with long legs I need to
stretch out.
*Enough room so I can spread out my papers,
work, etc on the tray without bothering the
next passenger. If I'm in the middle or by
the window it's generally tough to do. It's
tough being tall and husky.

As I said in the end we break even (at least
in my case.) Catman

Ditto's Catman.

At 6'1 with wide shoulders, I can tell you that a coach window seat on a 757 is torture.

The fuselage arcs into my shoulder forcing me to lean at an angle (I am NOT fat ((a little overweight yes)) i feel like I am leaning on the person in the middle seat.

Catman - the old fashioned way? credit cards and offers?? No no no no...the old fashioned way is to be a FREQUENT FLYER. I think allowing all of these other ways to earn miles is ridiculous. There is no integrity left in the program at all. People should earn miles for flights only. No American Express...no MCI etc. It is not a frequent flyer program anymore...it is a sometime flyer, frequent shopper, stay on the phone too long program.
And Phil you are so right. It is not their God given right to upgrade. But they sure think it is with their $100 ticket in their hand.
Also the offer you mention Catman (if you guys dont already know) is for select Boston, Greensboro, Greenville, New York, Norfolk, Richmond, Raleigh-Durham residents only. And you must call to register with the promo code given. So if you do not live in that market you would not qualify for the promotion. I am telling you this because of your post on the other page about this. If someone calls who does not live in one of those areas they will not be eligible.

Jenya: I only mentioned the Siliver Medallion
offer as a favor to other frequent flyers so
no one is left out. I did not know about the
market restrictions -- It was NOT mentioned
on the letter. And I think that was dumb to
limit it to certain markets. If Delta wants
more ff-ers why not open it nationwide.

Apologizes to those who saw my post and went
through a lot of headaches trying to get info
on this offer. I don't work for Delta and if
I see an offer that I think might be of interest to you I'll mention on.

On another issue Jenya -- I earn the bulk of
my ff miles the old fashioned way -- flying,
lots of flying. And If I can get a few
extra ways to boost my miles (which only account for about 10-percent of the miles
I earn) then why shouldn't I? Those "unfair"
credit cards, phone programs, offers have put
me over the top to some very nice vacation
air tickets, free hotel nights.

I don't remember even paying 100 dollars for
one night in a hotel (unless I wanted to stay
in a Motel Six) -- let alone an airline ticket. I think the cheapest I paid for a ticket's like 350 dollars and that was in 1990 -- when I entered the frequent flyer world. Catman.
