Reservation Split Mid-Trip

A unusual experience. My wife and I on the same confirmation number flew GRR-ABQ. In Albuquerque I checked the return flight on the app to see what the chances of an upgrade were. My wife was not visible. I called Delta. For some reason she was now under a different confirmation number. The Delta agent had no idea why. And the two confirmation codes could not be stitched back together.

Since I am Platinum and she Silver, I was upgraded to first and she wasnt. Ordinarily, we both would have been upgraded since there were open seats

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Anything unusual happen on outbound flights? They may have split you so one could be upgraded without the other in case only one seat is left. Usually they will ask before they do this. Once split, you can't combine reservations back together.

I think the fault I see here is that if someone did that, Delta should have at least told OP.

If the Delta rep you spoke with didn’t know, it’s almost certain no one here will know either. There are a lot of speculative possibilities.

Edited to add: The OP PM'd me and stated that one of them were upgraded on the outbound, and therefore that's when the PNR was split.
