I think I sort of lucked out. I completed a Status Challenge to Gold Medallion from UA in January-February, 2020. The next month things started to shut down due to the pandemic. Since all of my "challenge" flight were in 2020, at the end of February I had ~19,000 MQM from flying and an additional 10,000 MQM from an AMEX Reserve sign-up bonus. My only other flights in 2020 were for medical reasons in October, which netted me about 5,000 MQM.
But I also received an additional 15,000 MQM for the AMEX boost and 9,000 more MQM in the Fall, 2020 AMEX spending 'threshold' bonus promotion. I rolled over just under 59,000 MQM into 2021.
This year, another medical flight in April yielded just over 8,000 MQM and a flight to visit relatives in early August another 3,000. Plus I reached the AMEX spending threshold in July for 18,500 MQM. So I now am PM through at least January, 2023 and have accumulated just under 89,000 MQM. I have two itineraries scheduled for next month which, if they happen (fingers crossed) will put me at close to 103,000 MQM. I have to take another trip in October for business that should earn at least another 5200 MQM, depending on routing. So I expect to end this year with ~108,000 MQM (126,000 if I reach the second AMEX boost, which may be possible) that will roll over into 2022. I'll likely flight at lease 30,000 miles in 2022 and will almost certainly get at least one 15,000 MQM boost from AMEX. So I think I should have anywhere from 153,000 to 168,000 MQM at the end of 2022.
My expectation is that next year, soon after I meet the PM MQD threshold or AMEX MQD waiver (whichever comes first) I will receive notification from DL of Platinum status through January, 2024. But since I've never actually "done" this, will 75,000 MQM be deducted from my account immediately or will they wait until January 1 in the (vain, I expect) hope that I might spend enough to reach DM?

They deduct the 75,000 MQM at the end of the year (December 31), not immediately. So you will have some time next year to reach DM - it sounds like for you the challenge will be getting the 15,000 MQDs in 2022 (or you could spend 250,000 on the Delta credit card, which is excessive IMO)

Me- SM in 2019 and rolled over about 18K miles
2020-didnt fly but hit the DL AmEx Platinum heavy for assorted bonuses and along with double rollover of 2019 let me start the year with 49K
2021- flying again, still using credit card, hit PM earlier this summer and should roll over 95k+ MQMs at end of year.
So PM for at least 2022 and 2023 (DM is beyond household pay grade) and a soft landing to GM for 2024 seems most realistic given expected receding pandemic and return to planned travel patterns.

However, there's not 18,500 DL AmEx spend threshold MQM. It's either 12,500 for the DL AmEx Plat credit card or 18,750 MQMs on the Reserve card. The current promo gives 25% more MQMs for than, compared, to 10,000 and 15,000.

Silver Medallion Status Question For The Experts
My son currently has around 24,000 MQMs and resides in the Bahamas so MQD/Amex waiver not relevant. He will be visiting us in USA over Christmas/New Years. In normal years he would need to cross the 25,000 MQM threshold by 12/31 to get Silver. With rollover is it better for him strategically to cross the 25,000 MQM threshold in late December/21 or in early January/22 or does it not matter this year? His goal is to keep Silver status for as long as possible. Thank you.

None of the answers above are quite right - given all MQM rollover next year, if the son reaches Silver in December, he will have over 25,000 miles, which then all roll over into 2022. Since there is no MQD requirement for him, he then also automatically has Silver for 2023. So he should go ahead and take the December flight.
In this case, the difference between earning Silver in December and earning in January or whatever is that the son is presumably not a Silver from December through January, but the son is still in a great position to be a Silver through January 2023 regardless

But because of the rollover rules this year, you could go ahead and earn in Dec 2021 and then all you need for next year is to hit the MQD waiver (or MQD minimum unless exempt) to re-earn.
Basically the main difference from normal is all of your MQMs will rollover for next year, instead of just the amount above your status level

If you earn it in January 2022 it will last through January 31 2024.

Then he should get it as soon as possible, he will effectively have enough MQM with one more trip to have Silver through January 31, 2024, since that date is fixed if he wants Silver as long as possible he needs to earn it as soon as possible with that one more trip that will get it for him.
