Delta Accelerates Airbus Deliveries

  • Delta has exercised 25 purchase rights into firm narrowbody A321neo aircraft orders and added 25 additional purchase rights to its order book.
  • Delta expects to take delivery of its first A321neo in the first half of 2022. With these incremental aircraft, Delta’s total purchase commitment for the A321neo will now be 125 firm aircraft, with 100 purchase rights.
  • Also accelerated delivery of two A350-900 and one A330-900neo widebody aircraft for second half of 2022.

Glad to see it's more A321s and not some 737MAX!

You're right! They had get rid of the older 737-800 aircraft. It's time to retired. Orders new A320neo or A319neo. Please no orders 737-MAX!

I highly doubt DL will place a Boeing order anytime soon. Firstly, too much bad blood. Next, DL has gone all in on Airbus, even getting rid of the few 777 they had. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 738s to slowly start to retire.

Amazing that no one complains about the 757 seeing as it shares a common fuselage with the 737. In fact, the 707/727/737/757 all shared it. And the 738 isn't old by any stretch of the imagination. I'll agree that the PTV needs to be updated. But that applies to the 753 fleet as well.

I'm surprised they didn't order the A321XLR to replace the D1 752 fleet. But they could convert the order to the XLR later.

The 757s are simply better than the 737s from a passenger standpoint. That's likely why we don't complain about them.

The A321XLR seems to be the only real replacement for the 752s. I'm sure they'll convert or order more. That model is very popular and Airbus has quite a backlog on it, I believe.

One major difference between the 737 and 757 is that the forward lav on the 737 is where the fuselage has already begun tapering significantly and makes the lav incredibly cramped. I also believe the lavs in Y are smaller on the 737s than on the 757s as well.

Additionally, at least per SeatGuru, the DL 757Ds have a seat pitch of 30-32" while the 757S's have a pitch of 31-33". Seat pitch on the 737-900s in Y is 30-31." C+ on the 757S is 35" (34" on the 757D) while it's 34" on the 737-900. For those of us who are tall, every inch of pitch helps in some of these varying configurations.

DL is clearly very happy using 739s and 321ceo/neo on the vast majority of typical 757 routes. The only gap is secondary TATL markets which obviously require extra range. My guess is that the 321XLR is still too expensive because, as you noted, high demand. DL will likely wait for things to calm down

IIRC - the 757 has a lower floor, so it feel roomier than the 707/727/737. I've never flown on a 707, but it looked pretty tight when I walked on the old AF 1 at the museum of flight in Seattle.

This.

Boards through 2L, mid-cabin lav, quieter, better placement of windows and more space above the seats thanks to a lower cabin floor, better selection of 'good' Y cabin seats (2L exit rows, etc.). It's just all around a better experience. The A321 is about as good as it gets after that, despite boarding through 1L and having stupidly long boarding/deplaning times.

According to the article, the new A321s will have 42 C+ seats. That's up from 29 for the current configuration.

I'm a huge fan of these planes. The extra inch of seat width compared to the 739 is welcome.

If you say so. I'd gladly help fund a blind study of those who think they can tell a difference in an inch or less of seat width. And not all Airbus operators (including Northwest) used the wider seats and instead opted for a larger aisle. But some believe every Airbus has bigger seats. It's a matter of their state of mind and nothing more. WN would have been out of business a long time ago if the 737 was as bad some claim it to be. I think it gets more hate than the CRJ around here.
