Changing Trip in Vain Return

Delta screwed up royally on a trip this week. We are talking delays, misconnects, lost luggage. Came to a point my trip was pointless. I had to cut it short in MEX, and they booked me back home in First class under trip in vain. I have the same record locator and what not. Anyhow while I'm here I'd love to see some friends, and eat some tacos. Any chance I can call them and just rebook a couple days out? I should get some joy out of this mess.

No. It's not a trip in vain then. They'll happily rebook a few days out, but they're not going to refund the ticket in that case. Was MEX your intended destination? This will have bearing on if they rebook out a few days.

No it was GDL. I am in MEX now awaiting my lost luggage which has been recovered. Booked the Trip in Vain return for tomorrow afternoon. Essentially I got a free return on my half completed one way. I'm happy for the policy of course, and at the end of the day will use it and request a refund as Delta really screwed up. I made the mistake of not using a card with travel insurance. Booking a trip at 2am will do that lol. Just trying to get a silver lining lol. I know it's wrong in a way, but their irrops, luggage ops, and lack of picking up the phone got me here. flying me out another day doesn't affect them at all.

Yes and no. The whole point of trip in vain is that you wouldn't have taken the trip. While seeing friends wasn't the purpose, it has become the purpose if you ask to stay a few days. Otherwise everyone who gets delayed would declare trip in vain, vacation, return home and get a refund.
