The strangest thing just happened to me.
Last Sunday evening, I flew SJC - SEA on a E175 as a lowly GM. At upgrade window, there were 3 F seats left and I only got upgraded to C+. That was not surprising to me, since there are likely a bunch of tech workers flying in between two tech hubs, especially right before a work week. I decided to check the seat map on the app to see what it'd cost to get up there - I clicked on 1A, pressed "next", fully expecting a prompt to show me the dollar price I need to pay but none showed up, and I got confirmed in the seat.
At the time of boarding, the upgrade list had 7 names on it and nobody got upgraded with 0 F seats left.

Flying next week DCA-MSP-LAX and LAX-DCA (Non-Stop w/ D1).
Purchased last week for a business trip. Called and applied some RUC's. Both cleared late last week for all flights. F on the outbound and D1 on the return.
I was surprised the LAX-DCA flight cleared ahead of time. Normally that's a gate UG.

Plat, no reserve.
Monday night RDU-ATL, X fare, MD88, 7th of 30 for 5.
connecting to the last ATL-ORD at 2230, cleared at the window, pretty much a gimme except for Sunday and Thursday nights.

RDU - MSP, 717, cleared at PM window
MSP - SJC, 738, cleared at T-24 hours despite showing 6+ F seats for the entire period between PM window at T-24
flight change
SJC - ATL, 739, only exit row left when I made last minute change, was #1 with zero seats remaining (and had boarded) but F passenger so GA cleared me up on the plane (very welcome on the red-eye)
ATL - RDU, 738, cleared to C+ middle at flight change, ended up #1 for zero but C+ fine for short hop (and was on 738 with new, bigger IFE monitors)

A couple from Feb:
Fri Feb 22 SJC-LAS morning flight on an award ticket, cleared at the DM window (and after clearing all upgrades we still went out with 3 empty seats in F)
Sun Feb 24 LAS-SJC evening flight, L fare, DM+GM companion, 1&2 for 0 seats at checkin but eventually declined to split for single upgrade available at the gate.
The lowest FCM ever got on either flight was ~$74 per person per segment. LAS-SJC had I think ~6 seats open at T-5d but they disappeared pretty steadily and the flight was J0 for a while. Could have had the last two seats for the aforementioned $74, then it jumped up to something ridiculous like $600, then back to $74, but still not tempted for less than 90 minutes in the air in an E75 when we cleared C+ at booking.

I don't think there are any "gimmes" for a PM based in the DCA-IAD area these days.
I'm 3 for 9 since being relegated to PM. My successes were:
DCA-JFK (K fare, cleared at window) 3/7/19
JFK-TPA (K fare, was #2 on the UG list, I got the last UG) 3/7/19
SLC-SMF (L fare, was #2 for 5 UGs) 3/8/19
I was #5 for 0 seats TPA-DTW 3/7/19
I was the bubble boy DTW-DCA (last flight of the night, 2 got UGed at the gate, 1 got UGed after boarding) 3/7/19
I was #8 for 3 seats IAD-SLC 3/8/19
I was #13 out of 38 for 0 seats SMF-ATL.3/10/19
I was #2 for 0 seats ATL-IAD 3/10/19
I was #4 for 0 seats IAD-ATL 2/20/19
I've flown out of IAD on three different trips since the beginning of 2019. Load factors appear to be quite high. This past weekend, IAD-SLC had 4 empty seats in C+ with the other cabins sold out on an A320. There were 8 empties in Y ATL-IAD on an MD-88 with the other two cabins full. I wish that Delta could take the VS clubhouse and turn it into a SkyClub. it is a shame that this club isn't utilized to its full possible use.

I don't even track UG % as a SEA-based GM anymore because this year has been a joke. The last few flights, I'm always in the top 2 or 3, then a couple hours before the flight, all available seats disappear. I had a significantly better experience last year as an FO, and literally the only improvement for me as gold has been SP security lane access during busy travel times.

3/7 so far this year
PM w/ Reserve
1/19 LAX-ATL- C+
1/19 ATL-BTR- C+
1/22 BTR-ATL- F upgrade couple days prior to flight
1/22 ATL-LAX - back of plane
1/25 LGB-SLC - C+ time of booking
1/28 SLC-LGB - F upgrade at gate (last seat-companion not upgraded to F)
3/8 LAX-DFW - Bought F upgrade w/ 10,900 miles
3/11 DFW-LAX - F upgrade at gate
Any idea how tough of an upgrade chances the D One flights from LAX-DCA would be on Saturday and Tuesday? Was shocked I was bumped to D One as GM from SEA-JFK last year
