I believe that means all SFO-SLC/SEA flights. That's a nice upgrade
I'm seeing 3x 221 / 2x E75 loaded in the Jan20 schedule for SEA-SJC, but SEA-SFO is definitely 6x 221 - I think this will be the first winter season SEA-SFO is flown entirely w/ mainline a/c. Quite the upgrade.

I booked AUS-LAX for 12/28 to 12/31 for 26K miles. This schedule change Sat. I got the email I was downgraded to OO E175. At least this one route has completely reverted to regional for the duration posted. Very disappointed.

And these units were developed in-house by Delta Flight Products (or whatever they’re calling this genius group) which DL is so proud of.....shame.

Yep, am PM so I went ahead and called for redeposit as soon as I confirmed it was removed from the entirety of the posted schedule.

I'd give it a little time, it's a new system. If they still have reliability problems four or six months in, then maybe there is a problem bigger than just teething. Being able to do seatbacks without the more extensive wiring and basically eliminating the weight and hassle of underseat boxes will -- one hopes -- be worth it.

Like kjnangre, I give credit to DL for keeping the commitment to seatback screens. I was pretty surprised they invested in them for for the A320 fleet.

great point. The unwillingness of American in particular to keep them seems short sighted. The model of full service prices with low cost deliverable can’t be sustainable for long.

This is an entirely engineered from the ground up solution, so it would almost be surprising if there weren’t some problems. Heck, even the A350’s commercially available Panasonic system is rather flaky, and that’s been flying for over a year.

The potential payoff of having an in-house, low cost IFE solution is well worth a couple months of teething issues. If they can stabilize this, they can even sell it to other airlines. Legacy IFE is silly these days - a consumer device model makes way more sense, and I think the DL gamble on these will absolutely be worth it in the long run.

(Note that if WiFi was also broken, that points to an aircraft electrical issue or a WiFi equipment issue, rather than an IFE specific problem. Could be A220 teething issues rather than DL IFE caused problems.)

I wonder if Delta Flight Products is a new venture in DL’s overall strategy in diversifying revenue streams. Tech Ops does contracting work for other airlines and brings in almost a billion in revenue each year.

Of course, at the end of the day, it’s just an airline. Looking forward to the A220 in SEA. Also see it loaded in the Sep schedule on SEA-SFO.

DL touted one of the advantages to the new IFE system that it is much easier to fix when technical issues arise with it being much easier to swap the screens in and out.

Going to answer my own questions here and a mini-review after flying LGA - DFW - LGA in 28 hours which provided a decent amount of BIS time (4 hours on the way down, 3.25 hours on the way back)

Pros:
  • Beautiful new plane -- really just feels like a smaller A319 (didn't realize that was possible) with all the benefits of the A319 refurb (brand new screens, larger bins, wide seats, etc.)
  • IFE was great for me -- had the airshow on while working for the flight down and watched a movie and TV show on the evening flight back home
  • Amazing FAs -- the lead FA on DFW - LGA in particular was so enthusiastic about the new A220, made me sad the F upgrade didn't clear (though her co-workers were excellent too)
  • Sat in the exit row 15B on the way down -- great legroom even with bag underfoot (they boarder early so missed having opportunity to put bag in overhead)
  • Returned in C+ (12C) and equally as much legroom
  • Window in bathroom is fun and has a nice view to the back of the wing

Cons
  • Middle/lower back of the seats -- let me start by saying the padding on touch of all the seats was fantastic but after sitting in them a few major issues:
    • sitting in 15B, the guy behind me kept shoving stuff into his seatback pocket and I could feel every single item poking me in the back, despite what seemed like fairly substantial padding in the lower back -- every time he took something out I felt it, everytime he put something in I felt it, and when he just left it overstuffed in there I felt it
    • sitting in 12C -- thought it would be better (no one poking me in back the whole time) but the cushion itself was uncomfortable. I think it was the red bar that goes across the lower middle of the seat in C+. Presumably just a function of the seats being so new that it wasn't broken in yet but unfortunately for me I felt the brunt of that

Conclusion: Mixed feelings. The plane itself is awesome -- lots of space, big bins, feels open, new plane smell, wide seats, airy, fast/responsive IFE, fast WiFi, but seat comfort is a big downside for a longer flight. I'm hopeful it was just a teething issue and a matter of the pleather being broken in (and not having a-holes sit behind you) though being East Coast based it is largely irrelevant today unless I have a return trip to DFW (since BOS is a direct out of RDU) or am routing via SEA (and maybe SLC as more flights come online).

8107 has taken a couple of repositioning flights but has not yet taken any revenue flights nor is it scheduled to do so. It's currently in SLC, which isn't even scheduled to have any A220 flights until May. Maybe it's gone there so SLC employees can get used to the plane.
