Value of Delta Miles

Hi,

I have a $300 Delta Gift Cert and 40k miles.

Planning to do a $400 Roundtrip. If I use the miles, am I short-changing myself at 1 cent/mile?

Assuming I can always use Gift Cert at later point...

1 cent per mile is generally considered the absolute floor in mile valuation. Since you can essentially always redeem at 1 cent each, in your shoes I'd probably use the cert, and keep the miles for next time to try and get better than 1 cent each for them.

Also, keep in mind that certs expire but (at this point in time) DL miles do not (although they do depreciate in value).
