Applaud the OP for being the better person in this exchange. Ultimately, it sounds like the final routing (after the MX) was actually preferable, which I'll toss up to karma. Enjoy Copenhagen - awesome city.

DL was out of line trying to get out of compensation for this. They shouldn't have rescheduled him without clarifying that he was okay with the new schedule and comp.

Paging, paging.... No answer. Suddenly, they appeared! DRAT!

Anyway, they were occasional travelers, I'd guess, and they were just THRILLED to not hafto connect, plus get in earlier! Nothing was ever discussed with them about comp. I stood there the whole time!

That said, while, technically, the OP here probably isn't entitled to anything, surely the GA must've known the OP was looking for comp. Who in the world would ask about a VDB and NOT want comp, especially to change to cr@ppier seats on such long flights?!? Are there some kind of bonuses for keeping stations under a certain VDB budget?
I think that this is different than the OP's case because, in the case of this family, the routing was actually a significant improvement over their original booking. Presumably the family did not book the nonstop flight because it was more expensive and so in this case, they were given routing that was more valuable than what they paid for.

Not so with OP. At best it was an even exchange, but with being given worse seating (especially on a long flight) I think most would agree that that he was given something that was worth less than what he paid for, and not compensated for the loss of value. Also, OP responded to a request for volunteers, which almost always means compensation. The family was sought out with a specific offer in mind, that being the offer of flying nonstop. I would say that the OP was tricked.

Hahahahahahahaha!

Oops!

That was supposed to say PM HOTLINE, but the wifi cut off at 10,000 feet and I couldn't fix it!

Benito, I saw that you were offered a $200 voucher after a phone call. I thought I read that you turned it down. My misread!

JDTravel: I wasn't comparing my story of the family of 3 with this story. I was just pointing out that there are, indeed, some situations that don't warrant any comp.

Once flying from LAX-BOS, I volunteered and took LAX-JFK-BOS. At first, they were not going to give compensation because the flight was going to leave earlier, but I pointed out, we were going to arrive later.

However, if compensation was agreed to, then compensation is due. Contract 101.

That seems to be the simplest way to look at this. There's nothing magical about VDB. Sometimes it's easy because DL and the passenger both have the same result in mind and there are not many options. Sometimes it is a discussion.

But, once there is a deal, there is a deal.

DING DING

You should have gotten at least $500 (or whatever they were offering at the time) for this.
