This has been asked numerous times. No one knows for absolutely sure. However the general consensus is that it's based on the underlying fare class. W fares aren't really W fares. They're normal economy class fares that simply allow one to be booked in W class. So if the underlying fare is a L fare, it should be based off the L fare basis.

L was an example, hence the word "if"
Look in your receipt email for a line that looks something like like
Fare Details: XXX DL YYY###.## followed by a bunch of letters (where XXX and YYY are your origin and destination, maybe with one or more X/ZZZ if you are connecting somewhere). That's your fare basis code.
