Question about SDC

Good morning, flying EWR->ATL->ORD on Sunday (2x the miles of LGA->ORD) and my flight gets in a little later than I would like so i'm thinking about an SDC.

Do I have to fly EWR->ATL->ORD or can I change to a different route? Do i have to fly out of Newark and into O'Hare or would LGA/JFK/MDW be possibilities?

Would love to either fly out of LGA since its much closer to home or find a way to do JFK->SLC->ORD

1) Same fare class has to be available to do a SDC.

2) Has to (in theory) be a valid routing, which I would bet via SLC is not.

3) Only DMs have an unpublished benefit of being allowed to SDC to or from co-terminal airports.

What else?

Doesn't it also have to follow the routing rules for your particular fare?

I kind of thought that was what I was saying.

Thanks for the feedback. So it sounds like I still have to fly out of Newark and would be limited to flying through ATL/CVG/DTW/MSP. There's an EWR->MSP->ORD leg available in my bucket (L) at a more convenient time so i guess i'll try for that the night before i fly.

You can do it 24 hrs before your original flight. so if your original flight leaves at 7am, you can call in at 7am the day before.

Where did you find that? I'm looking for a new source of fare class availability now that FlightStats is apparently dead.
