I must give credit where credit is due. dadamn used the term in the post I quoted. I liked it too, so I used it.
Everyone else has mentioned rollover, so I'll point out 25% bonus miles for FO. If you already have 35k booked, as a no-dallion you'd earn the flat 35k redeemable miles, but as an FO, you'd be getting 43,750. 8750 miles difference (or $87.50 if valued at 1cent/mile) isn't bad for taking a short flight to keep some basic status.

One could say that people about to lose status or drop by one or more status levels have earned the benefits according to the FF program rules when they qualified for their status. They simply have failed to requalify for the next year. OTOH, removing a month (even the shortest one of the year) from that bad period that's especially elite heavy due to the overlap of old elites and new elites will be a slight improvement--especially for me as I seem to have some domestic flights every year right before March 1.

But I'm just using it as an excuse to eventually migrate back to AA (assuming that the merger isn't a disaster)...
