Boeing 717: The Definitive Thread

My guess is staffing. The 717 routes are bad due to their short duration which means more wall time to get the same block time ($) due to more frequent ground time. The only worse situation is NYC A220 where the FO is getting poverty wages to live in NYC so the commute is basically guaranteed.


This is a gross simplification but the 717 is listed 900 miles shorter range than the A220 and 1300 miles shorter than the 739. A 40 hour line would be 20k miles which could be 14x717, 9x220, or 8x737. Each extra turn would be 0.5-1hr unpaid time, in addition to the increased “active” time from checklists, takeoff, and landing. Since the FAA defines duty limits based on report time, not active flying time, it ends up being less pay per day on average. The best case senior on 717 is working 3-5 more unpaid hours per line than the best case 73N, and the 73N can mix long and short to maximize duty limits where 717 can only be shorter.


Assume everyone hates the 717. So activating a 717 causes the highest ranked FO who is willing to fly domestics, probably a 73N, to move to Captain, then the highest 717 FO to move to 73N and two new hires to go to 717 FO causing 4 training events and an FO shortage on 73N with a demand spike for training on 717 FO and Captain. So pacing would be due to a shortage of 717 sims and line check pilots.

Just my speculation.
